The E2 Panel...

The claims filed before the UNCC were presented to Panels of Commissioners.  I had the great honour of working with the E2 Panel.  I have had the opportunity of working with different panels, but must say, that the E2 is one that I am most impressed with.  And I know that I am not the only one who has this opinion.

The Panel after the E2(3) Report

From left to right, the people in the picture are:

Prof David Caron - American Prof from Berkeley.   Fellow believer in Star Wars universe.  When I said my farewell to the Panel, he told everyone in the room "This is something between Darren and me", turned to me and intoned, "May the Force be with you!"  YES!

Prof Bernard Audit - Our chairman from France.  The only English speaker who actually trained in grammar - which meant interesting moments when we were drafting reports as we tried to fit current English usage to proper and correct grammar.  A single moment that sticks in my mind?  There was once I was advocating a position that would have given a claimant more compensation.  It was a difficult argument, but one I had to try.  Prof Audit listened to me carefully, then took of his spectacles, leaned back, and said, "Darren, you are a very able advocate for the claimant", I can still hear that little pause here, "but - no."

And right at the far right, Senor Jose Abascal.  He is from Mexico.  A man of few words, leaving that to others.  But one who ensures we get things commercially right.  A single memorable moment?  The Panel were in discussion about whether a concrete mixing company should be compensated.  From some quarter someone had suggested that the concrete was never lost.  Senor Abascal looked at us and while drawing circles in the air with his index finger, said, "Yes - if you can keep the mixer turning round and round for the next 9 months..." We looked, and we laughed at the image he provided, and moved on.

Also in the picture is Donata, a colleague on E2, who had this great idea, that we should do something to remind the Panel about their time on the E2(3) report.  So we created the Asterix cartoon collage, assigning various Asterix characters to each of us.  I still have my copy.  It's great!

The Panel thanking us after we presented them with the Asterix collage
