More than you EVER wanted to know about our animals!

Cinq, Ti, Schach, Nike, Puck and Scamp

What can I say? We're suckers for animals in trouble. It's like the child who keeps bringing stray or injured animals home until his mommy says "No more!" Except-- with both of us bringing animals home-- there's no one to say no! We have managed to restrain ourselves to cats and dogs, since they all get along fine-- we know better than to introduce a rabbit or bird into the household. Though it's true we have considered ferrets...

My husband and his roommate bought this dog when they wanted a little puppy in their apartment. When he and I moved in together a year later, Roscoe came with the deal. Roscoe is a Husky/Collie cross, and is now almost six years old and about 65 pounds. Roscoe stays in the yard or comes in as he likes, stays inside while we have company or when we leave for the day, has his own chair, and sleeps at the foot of the bed.

While I was walking Roscoe one day around our apartments, he sniffed out a loud, squealing thing in the bushes. With lunch meat and my version of cat meows, this tiny black kitten finally emerged from the bushes an hour later. Though about nine weeks old she weighed only ounces, and she ravenously ate anything we could give her. She quickly took over the house and bossed Roscoe around. Ti is my little treasure, and though very sick right now she remains my favorite kitty. She is about five years old.

Not one week later than the night I brought Ti inside, and not to be outdone, my husband found a tiny grey tabby outside the back door to the pizza place where he worked. It's piercing cries got his attention, and since we lived just across the street he dropped off this sick, pitiful kitten that night while delivering pizzas. We named him Velcro because even at about six weeks old, he had no mastery of his own claws and would stop still while walking across carpet or the couch, until one of us came along to disengage him. We moved to South Carolina within a month of taking in both of these cats. Velcro disappeared the next summer while we were away on our honeymoon and a friend was watching the house, but stay tuned...

Tao Tao, sacked out Tao, with new family Tao on doghouse

The lady who lived in the other half of our duplex had a white Siberian Husky named Raine, who she left chained to the back steps, intelligent and kind but sadly neglected. This was the most beautiful dog I'd ever seen-- even a little creepy with her bright blue eyes that reflected red in low light-- so we would go pet her, and unchained her to take for walks with Roscoe (her owner was rarely home), and unbeknownst to her owner, even let her inside our half of the house to give her attention and let her play with Roscoe. When she became pregnant by some neighborhood mutt (Roscoe is fixed) we fell in love with one of the female puppies with a distinctive black and white mask. Though we'd already said we couldn't take in any more animals, Roscoe always tried to romp indoors with the cats and we decided Roscoe needed a doggy playmate who would grow to be his own size. We left for a week vacation and told the lady that if she could care for the puppy for us until after Christmas we would love to have it. We came back to find that she'd locked the puppy in a bathroom for the days while we were gone, with newspapers and food, but no attention-- and I suspect-- no light. We considered calling the animal authorities about her, for the purebred Husky's sake, but now that we had the puppy (Tao) away from her, we were worried they'd take Raine away and she'd be no better off than she already was, sharing our backyard, where we can at least keep an eye on her and care for her. Now Raine would come take walks with us, Roscoe, and puppy Tao, happy as a clam. Now little kooky Tao is about four years old, and about 45 to 50 pounds.

Raine Raine and Tao Raine, Tao and Roscoe

Yep, you guessed it. Though we wavered for a year over whether or not to call the humane authorities on Ms. Shaeffer next door, one day she came to us in a panic. She was moving to San Diego and needed money, and did we want to buy her fancy purebred dog? Well of course we would love to have Raine but we didn't have much money, either, and were angry with Ms. Shaeffer for the way she was treating Raine-- who was currently pregnant again, was malnourished from not getting special foods during her pregnancy, and had sarcoptic mange so badly she had large bald spots. Under the conditions that we have a vet statement showing Raine has had two treatments for her mange, that we would get Raine's pedigree papers, and her doghouse, we agreed to pay her for the dog. Raine has been a blessing. She had her puppies just before we were to move into a new rental house. We successfully battled the mange with Raine, Roscoe, and Tao, and Raine's six new puppies. We were able to give all six to good homes, and Raine is now happily romping in our big backyard with Tao every day. Raine is five years old, and about 55 pounds. Raine and Tao stay outdoors for the most part, though we let them in a few times a week to spend time with us and the rest of the animals.

Tigger (Squeak)

I only include Squeak in here to explain the next cat. Ti and Velcro had a litter, a litter of one kitten, and the kitten lived to be three or four weeks old before it died. Now-- go on to the next one.

Scamp Scamp

Though we had decided not to "replace" the little kitten, Ti had been wandering through the house looking for it for two weeks and it was breaking our hearts. A friend of mine at work mentioned she absolutely had to get rid of her horrible kitten, who was terrifying her elderly chihuahuas. I loved the idea of a kitten wreaking wild havoc upon old dogs, and said I'd come by after work and take it home. I brought the cat home that night, surprising my husband and his family who was down for a visit. We renamed the kitten "Scamp", since what her former owners called her is not for polite company. Scamp has been a dear. During the summer of 1996, while we were gone for a month, a friend lived in the house to watch the animals for us. Somehow, Ti and Velcro got outside and disappeared. We feared the worst, since they are never allowed outside, and settled down with Scamp, our one cat, who seemed a little confused about suddenly being the only cat but tried to make up for it with her playfulness. Several weeks later, Ti came around the dogs in the backyard, very hungry, and let me take her back inside, and she's been with us since. Scamp is now about three years old.

Nike and Schach Nike and Cinq Scamp, Schach, and Nike

One evening while my husband was at work, a doctor he worked with mentioned she had found a litter of kittens in a trash can and was trying to find homes fo them. She'd found three of them homes, and was trying to get him to take the last two. He called me from work, and I said no, knowing he would bring them home anyhow, which he did. One was much more outgoing than the other, with tabby stripes and black wing tips at the tops of her ears like a lynx. After a while we named her Nike, for the Nikean statue, Flying Victory. The other one is black with white spots (or is she white with black spots?), and depending on how you look at her face, you see a funny white moustache, or a little skinny black one. The funny white one made us think of silly professors, and the fact that the black one is reminiscent of Charlie Chaplin or Hitler makes an interesting statement about the first image you get when you look at her-- in fact, her perfect side-to-side symmetry and multiple possible images led us to call her Schach, for Rorschach, the man who developed the inkblot test as a psychiatric tool. These two came to us together, and in general have been inseparable since. Often, out of all of the cats, we still find them curled up together. They're about two years old now.

Cinq Cinq catching some rays Cinq

For those of you who remember your French numbers, Cinq was named for the fact that she was our fifth cat. We were just going to call her "Number Five", like the Star Trek character, but my husband rightly pointed out that saying the same thing in French added just a little touch. A friend had two cats who had had huge litters at the same time and was having a horrible time giving them all away. Somehow we ended up with one. She is just gorgeous, and for a while was a little prissy, in fact their name for her had been something like Priscilla or Penelope. She is our only cat to come from a house of high standing, with known parentage-- everyone else has dubious backgrounds. Now she's very dear. She's about a year old now.

Puck Puck test driving the new printer Puck, behind bars

Ah yes... Puck. I had seen a small, skinny black kitten with white markings at the laundromat, with big fat women throwing plastic laundry baskets at it: "Shoo! Go on home, don' you come aroun' heya and bite me now, shoo!" But I couldn't get the cat to come to me (I can't imagine why it wouldn't trust people). It came inside the laundromat to get out of the hot sun, and sit just inside in the shade of a chair, but once anyone made a move towards it, it was gone-- it would sneak back a few minutes later. I knew perfectly well that I could love this kitty, but we couldn't possibly take in another cat and I would be embarrassed to bring it home. What would my husband say? It was about a week LATER that he brought Cinq home (see above paragraph). The next day after work I stopped at the laundromat to see if the kitty still hung around. It was there, under the chair. After a moment it was obvious it didn't want to come to me, and it went outside and sat under someone's car. When it was time for the person to leave, I got down on the ground in my dress clothes and pulled the cat out and threw her in my car. "For your own good, kitty, I promise," I said. Now Puck, though sometimes genuinely a terror and living up to her namesake, has been such a dear to have. I can't imagine this house without her now. She's about a year old.

Velcro? Velcro

For those of you still paying attention, you would know that Velcro was with us at our first place, then disappeared with Ti while we were gone for a trip. A year and a half later, this was last fall, my husband and I were taking a walk and admiring fall colors on a dead-end road which extends across the street from our own. We came across an enormous grey cat who was acting strangely. When it heard our voices it looked up, and on a whim we called out "Velcro?" And at the sound of his name he came right up to us. We couldn't believe it, and even though he let us pick him up and madly purred while we pet him, we still weren't sure it was him. The coloring was right, but he was enormous! Either someone has been feeding him-- well-- or our wimpy little boy kitty had become a raucous tomcat and was living well off mice and birds. He had no collar, so we didn't think he'd been adopted by a new family. He let us carry him home and he's been with us since! We kept him sequestered for a couple of days at first-- after all, we had a house full of female cats and one quck look told us he was most definitely still a fully-functional male cat. After having him"fixed" up a bit, he's as happy as any male cat would be in a house full of women! Velcro is five years old, and though he's lost a little weight he is still a big kitty. Most of our kitties have come from malnourished beginnings and so are on the small side, but I suppose a tough outdoor kitty packs on muscle and meat.

You're not DONE yet, you say?

Tucker

My husband greeted me at the door one afternoon, saying "Now, before you wonder about my head, there is a kitten in the bedroom but it is Nez's. He saved it-- it was crouched in running water in a gutter on a busy street." "Fine," I said, and went about my business. After some time though, my curiosity got the best of me and I went to look at it. It took some searching, as it was very tiny, very black, and very frightened, and had wiggled into a shadow behind the headboard of the bed. We kept her for a couple of days, and by the time Nez said he wasn't going to keep the kitten, we already knew it and had made a space for her in our hearts. Once time when Nez was over, the kitten had been tearing about the house as little kitties do, and was curled up on the end of the couch in a tiny black ball. "She's all tuckered out," he commented, and Tucker stayed with her. She'll be a year old next spring, though she's grown like a weed and isn't much smaller than the other kitties.
