How to Connect to Club Seattle

There are several ways to connect to the Club Seattle chat channel. The simplest way (but not the best) is through the web link on the Enter Chat page. But better than that, you can use an "IRC chat client" program.

Using the Enter Chat Page

If join the chat channel through the Enter Chat page, we reccomend selecting the EZ Talk Pro ("more features") chat program, rather than the EZ Talk Lite ("loads faster") chat program.

Using an "IRC Chat Client" Program

You may find that you get better results using a special "IRC chat client" program, instead of the "EZ" programs. (The "EZ" programs are written in Java, which doesn't work very well on some systems.) Click on the type of system you're using for more information about chat programs for that system:  Windows 95 or 98 (and probably NT also), Windows 3.x, Macintosh, or WebTV. After the system-specific instructions, you can read how to use IRC programs.

Other "IRC Chat Client" Programs

Windows 95 and 98

If you have Windows 95 or 98 (and probably NT also), there are at least two IRC chat client programs you can download that work better than the "EZ" chat programs. The two we know about are mIRC and PIRCH. See below for how to use them, and why you might want to.

Windows 3.x

If you have any Windows 3.x version, there are at least two IRC chat client programs you can download that work better than the "EZ" chat programs. The two we know about are mIRC and PIRCH. See below for how to use them, and why you might want to.

Macintosh

If you have a Macintosh, there is at least one IRC chat client program you can download that work better than the "EZ" chat programs. The one we know about is Ircle. See below for how to use them, and why you might want to.

WebTV

If you have a WebTV, there may be IRC chat client program that work better than TalkCity's "EZ" chat programs.

Note:  This information was collected by the webmaster, SteveS, who doesn't have a WebTV, and knows very little about WebTV, so it's a mix of hear-say from WebTV users, speculation, and documentation on the official WebTV site. If you have a WebTV and think you know better than the webmaster, it's quite possible that you're right.

Although all WebTV programs are "PersonalJava" programs, some of them are better than others, and you may find that you like an alternate IRC chat client better than the "EZ" chat programs. (PersonalJava is said to be a programming language very similar to Java, but simplified for use on less advanced computers, like the one in WebTV.)

There are quite a number of IRC chat client programs for WebTV users. Thanks to some Club Seattle regulars with WebTV, I'm aware of a few lists of IRC chat client programs.
Gookie pointed out the list at http://members.tripod.com/~Trilogymaster/chatlinks.html.
warriorwoman pointed out the list at http://www.oocities.org/SiliconValley/Lab/4998/index.html ( stevalingus sent a pointer to it also).
Thanks for the pointers!

A few of them of them (probably in the lists above) are Skeletron, Outrage 69, Berry, Fishman's, Cheese Chat (the one with lots of rude macros), and "Jesus" (address unknown). You may be able to find more information from a search site like Yahoo, but then again maybe not. Asking a more experienced WebTV user may also help.

If you have more information on improved WebTV chat program, let the webmaster know about it for inclusion here. Thanks!

Using "IRC Chat Client" Programs

First, why would you want to bother with something else, when TalkCity's own chat programs are so easy to get started? The main reason is power. With a fancier chat program, you can use channel operator powers. (Anyone can become a channel operator, but that's not much fun if you can't use your operator powers!) You can also watch several channels at once, so that you can do fun stuff like hang out in #ClubSeattle, while keeping watch on #Local-Seattle so you can invite them to join us in #ClubSeattle. There are lots of other things you can do. Another advantage is that they are more "stable", meaning they crash less or not at all.

Each chat program has different installation instructions. For example, TalkCity's own chat programs install automatically when you enter a channel through a web page. It doesn't get much easier than that. For others, you need to follow the instructions on the web page that describes the program. If you try to follow those instructions and still have problems, ask for help in chat!

To run most IRC chat client programs, all you need to know are two pieces of information, TalkCity's chat server address and its "chat port number". (Never mind what all that means; all you have to do with it is fill it in where the program asks for it.)
    TalkCity's chat server address:  chat.talkcity.com
    TalkCity's chat port number:  6667
