There's an old man walkin' down the street.
He's an old man, but still he's thinkin' on his feet.
He says, "Son, come here and listen.
Let me tell you 'bout the story of my life."
He's got a glass eye, and a scar across his face.
He carries a weapon... he says it's just in case.
He says, "Nowadays, you just can't be too careful
Of those wanting to end your life.
That's right.
Mister, can you help me?
Tell me what I'm supposed to do.
I walk up and down this street each day
In search of something new."

He told me, "There was one time...
I could drive my Chevy down,
As a past time, to my old high school ground,
But now it's just a pile of broken memories
Layin' waste across my mind.
And there was freedom for some underprivileged few,
But now I see 'em prayin' for rights between the pews,
And it's been years since I've heard from my children,
But I guess they're doin' fine.
It's been a long time.
But maybe one day we will find ourselves a family.
After all, that's the way is't supposed to be.
You see?"

Oh, it's been a long time since they thought of me.
A lot of things have changed since '63.
I heard they moved to Tennessee.
Now, All I have to hold is a memory,
But I tell you mister, It's best this way.
If they could see me now, they'd turn away...
That's the story of my life."
Oh.....

"Now I'm wanderin'. I'm without a home.
I asked my country for help since I'm alone.
But all they say is 'Fill this out in triplicate,
And sign it on the dotted line.'
So all I have now is just my sanity,
But maybe someday they'll bury what's left of me.
But if anybody asks you, mister, please...
Tell 'em that I'm doin' fine.
I'm doin' fine.
So if you're smart,
Now's the chance to get a grip on all your fears.
'Cause your life can change in just a...
Just a couple of years.
Ya hear?"

"Oh, it's been a long time since I've had a friend.
It's been a long time, but now I'm near the end.
I hope someday you understand
My life, how it is, and who I am."
I said, "I tell you, mister,
My life has changed.
I understand, and I can feel your pain..."
He laughed and said, "HMPH!
That's the story of my life.
Oh... That's the story of my life.
Oh... That's the story of my life."
