MS Web Publishing Wizard 1.5

Warning: These Instructions May Not Work For You

1) You must have an Internet Connection that supports FTP, otherwise the MS Web Publishing Wizard will not work.

2) I had to upgrade to the most recent version of the Microsoft Web Publishing Wizard. You may or may not have to (but probably will).

3) I had to un-install the Web Publishing Wizard, reboot my machine, and then re-install the Web Publishing Wizard, before it would work properly. Your results may or may not be similar.

4) The Web Publishing Wizard is a bit quirky. The Wizard first has to contact www.oocities.org, to find out that it can't transfer the files directly. Then you get a chance to switch the Wizard to using FTP, and fill in the FTP information for GeoCities. The error messages are not as good as they could be, and this isn't helped by the fact that the initial connection to the GeoCities FTP server (ftp.oocities.com) often fails.

NOTE: There is a good tutorial on setting up the MS Web Publishing Wizard complete with pretty pictures at The AnswerPoint.

Using the Microsoft Web Publishing Wizard

The most recent version of the Microsoft Web Publishing Wizard (you will probably have to download it) can be used to FTP files to GeoCities. The FTP information for GeoCities is as follows:

Service Provider:   FTP

FTP server name:   ftp.oocities.com

Subfolder for Web pages:   /NeighborHood/1234
(your GeoCities subdirectory)

User:   your GeoCities Member Name

Password:   your GeoCities Password

There are two ways to use the Web Publishing Wizard. The First is to Publish from the FrontPage Explorer, this has the advantage that the FrontPage Explorer keeps track of which files to publish. The Second is to Use the Web Publishing Wizard Directly, this is fairly straight forward and follows the help. When you get to the 'Select Your Service Provider' drop down list. Select 'FTP', then use the GeoCities FTP information above.

Web Publishing from the FrontPage Explorer

You can use the Web Publishing Wizard from the FrontPage Explorer. Using the FronPage Explorer has the benefit that only those files which have not previously been published, get published (only your changed/new files are uploaded).

This is how I use the Web Publishing Wizard to publish from the FrontPage Explorer (I have a local File Web on my hard drive). This may or may not work for you, if you can't get it to work, you can always use one of the other methods for Uploading Your Files to GeoCities, or you can try Using the Web Publishing Wizard Directly (also see the readme.txt and help for the Wizard).

1.   Open your local File Web with the FrontPage Explorer

2.   Connect to the Internet (you can do this before opening the Explorer).

3.   From the File menu, select the Publish FrontPage Web sub-menu item

4.   The 'Publish FrontPage Web' dialog will open, fill in the fields as follows:

Destination Web Server:   www.oocities.org

Connect Using SSL:   uncheck this box (if it is checked)

Destionation FrontPage Web:   enter you file web's subdirectory, I use Sands1492.
Note: This is where you should put your GeoCities subdirectory (eg /SouthBeach/Sands/1492), but this dialog doesn't let you (the Web Publishing Wizard does let you).

Copy Changed pages only:   check this box

Add to an existing FrontPage web:   check this box

Push Ok   This takes a while, the FrontPage Explorer first connects to www.oocities.org, finds out it does not have FrontPage extensions. Then a list of files are compiled, and copied to a temporary directory. Then the Web Publishing Wizard is loaded.

5.   The MS Web Publishing Wizard Page: 'Publish Your Files on the Web' will come up. Press Next.

6.   The Wizard Page: 'Name The Web Server' comes up. In the Descriptive name field, fill in a short name (I use: Sands1492). Press Next

Note: At this point the Wizard tries to connect to www.oocities.org, and directly transfert the files, this may take a while. If a UserId and Password dialog appears (1st time), you can cancel it, because the Wizard can't transfer the files to GeoCities using this method anyway.

7.   The Wizard Page: 'Specify a Service Provider' comes up. Press Next.

8.   The Wizard Page: 'Select Your Service Provider' comes up. In the 'Service provider' drop down list select FTP, then Press Next.

9.   The Wizard Page: 'Specify the FTP Server and Subfolder' comes up. Fill in the fields as follows:

FTP server name:   ftp.oocities.com

Subfolder for Web pages:   /NeighborHood/1234
(your GeoCities subdirectory)

Press Next   to go to the next Wizard page

10.   The Wizard Page: 'Publish Your Files' comes up. Press Finish and Wait a while...

Eventually you should either get a User and Password Dialog, the Transferring Files progress (after User and Password the 1st time), or an error message.

If you get an error message of timeout, or you connected but the Geo Server said it was busy, try again later.

If you get a User and Password Dialog, fill in User and Password as follows:

User:   your GeoCities Member Name

Password:   your GeoCities Password

11.   Finally, you should get the Transferring Files progess window. After all the files are uploaded, you will get a completion message. Press Ok.

12.   Wait 10 minutes for the files to be transferred to your GeoCities address. You can then view your new pages. You may have to press Refresh or Shift-Reload on your browser to see the changes.

13.   The next time you publish, you will only have to press OK in the dialog wherre you entered the Web Server in step 4, the Web Publishing Wizard remebers the rest of the information entered.

Web Publishing Wizard at GeoCities

There is a good tutorial on setting up and using the MS Web Publishing Wizard to directly upload your files to GeoCities, complete with pretty pictures at The AnswerPoint.

And the following describes how to select your files for uploading to GeoCities:

You cannot select multiple files directly from Microsoft Web Publishing Wizard. Therefore, to post multiple files, you must use Windows Explorer. In Windows Explorer, select the files you want to post, right-click the files, point to Send To, and then click Web Publishing Wizard. To publish multiple files
  • Open Windows Explorer.
  • Select the files you want to post.
  • Right-click the selected files, point to Send To, and then click Web Publishing Wizard.
  • In the Web server box, click the drop-down arrow and select the name of the Web server where you want to post your files.
  • Click Next.
  • Click Finish.
  • Tips

  • To select multiple files and folders in Windows Explorer, in the folder window, hold down the CTRL key, and then click each item you want to select:
