Advice on shoe fetishism

From "Ask Judy" in the Waterbury Observer,
Vol. 4 Iss. 12

Q.

A friend of my brother's strikes me
as very weird. I don't know whether he is crazy
or sick. He is about 25 years old. When he comes
to my parents' house in Waterbury where my brother
and I still live, I've noticed him staring in my
closets, at my shoes! I guess it wouldn't have
seemed so weird but he was breathing heavy while
he was doing it.

I've also noticed him staring at my shoes when he, my
brother and I are watching TV, I am starting to
feel self-conscious. He is giving me the creeps.
My brother says I'm paranoid. His friend comes
from a very good family in Waterbury. Am I
paranoid, Judy, or is my brother's friend one of
those shoe weirdoes?

A.

No, it doesn't sound to me as if
you are paranoid. Good family or not, your
brother's friend could likely be a shoe
fetishist. Fetishism does not mean your brother's
friend is crazy or sick, what it means is he is
sexually aroused primarily in response to an
animate object such as shoe instead of the wearer.
Your brother's friend is very likely aroused by
shoes that have already been worn, probably by you.
This behavior poses a very unlikely threat towards you.
Your brother's friend wants your shoes because
they are passive, safe, quiet and cooperative.
What I would watch out for is your shoes being
stolen, as that is more likely the behavior of
a fetishist.

Shoe fetish is a fairly common fetish and is most
often used in private. In some cases the fetishist
can only be aroused by the fetish object. This is
unfortunate and can obviously pose problems
in relationships.

Frankly, there is a fine line between fetishism
and sexual preference. A man who only gets aroused
if his wife is attractive and has on black lacy
lingerie is considered to have a sexual preference
not a fetish. In any case, it is unlikely that your
brother's friend will admit to his fetish if confronted.
Keep your shoes out of sight if you want to make sure
they are left alone.
