It's 8 a.m., and trudging to class, through
the eye crusties and in-between yawns, up pops
a picture of Jenny McCarthy sitting on a toilet
wearing only Candies platform shoes and white panties.
Another flier bearing stereotypical words for
homosexuals also appears on campus bulletin boards
and publications.
The National Organization for Women and the
Triangle Coalition have posted
these types of controversial fliers around campus
to increase public awareness of
several issues.
The campus chapter of NOW posted the Jenny McCarthy
fliers on campus. "This week is 'Rape Awareness Week'
at MU," said the NOW campus chapter
secretary Kris Taulz. "We wanted to educate people that
images of women like this play into the rape culture
in American society. Seventy percent of women are
raped by people that they are dating."
Taulz also said, "It's out there, and it happens,
even if people say it doesn't."
Though NOW has good intentions for the fliers
they are posting, many students
say they don't see the statistics on the flier as
much as they see the picture.
Gerri Whitford's first reaction upon seeing the
flier was, "Ewww! She's just nasty. What ever
happened to acting like a lady?"
Jill Johnson, who was with Whitford, said, "I don't
get how it advertises anything
it's supposed to advertise."
