Adding Your Links to the Frame Pages

This is how to add a few sample links to the Frames Page you created in FP Frames 1. It is important to note that when you want to link to a page, and display it in the display frame of your frames page, set the target frame to frdisplay. When you want to link to another page, and have it replace your frames page, set the target frame to _top.

Adding a link to your Home Page

1.   Open the file 'frhome.htm' in the FrontPage Editor.

2.   Type the word 'Home' and select the word (double click on it with the mouse).

3.   Drop down the 'Insert' menu, and select the 'Hyperlink' sub-menu option (the Create Hyperlink Dialog will pop up).

4.   In the Create Hyperlink Dialog fill in the following fields:

page:   index.html
target frame:   _top

5.   Press OK.

6.   Save the file 'frhome.htm'.

7.   Using MS Internet Explorer, browse to your frames page, then press the 'Refresh' button.

8.   Using MS Internet Explorer, click with the mouse on the word Home in the top left corner of your frames page. If everything was done correctly, your Home Page (index.html) should load.

Adding index links to Page 1 and 2

Note: before doing this, you should create a dummy content page 'frtwo.htm'.

1.   Open the file 'frindex.htm' in the FrontPage Editor.

2.   Type the word 'Page1' and select the word (double click on it with the mouse).

3.   Drop down the 'Insert' menu, and select the 'Hyperlink' sub-menu option (the Create Hyperlink Dialog will pop up).

4.   In the Create Hyperlink Dialog fill in the following fields:

page:   frone.htm
target frame:   frdisplay

5.   Press OK.

6.   Type the word 'Page2' under the word Page1 and select the word (double click on it with the mouse).

7.   Drop down the 'Insert' menu, and select the 'Hyperlink' sub-menu option (the Create Hyperlink Dialog will pop up).

8.   In the Create Hyperlink Dialog fill in the following fields:

page:   frtwo.htm
target frame:   frdisplay

9.   Press OK.

10.   Save the file 'frindex.htm'.

11.   Using MS Internet Explorer, browse to your frames page, then press the 'Refresh' button.

12.   Using MS Internet Explorer, click with the mouse on the word Page1 in the index section of your frames page. If everything was done correctly, your Page 1 (frone.htm) should load in the display section.

13.   Using MS Internet Explorer, click with the mouse on the word Page 2 in the index section of your frames page. If everything was done correctly, your Page 2 (frtwo.htm) should load in the display section.

TARGET Values

When making links to other pages, you can use the following values for the TARGET of the Hyperlink.

name   Specifies to load the link into the targeted window or frame. The window must begin with an alphanumeric character to be valid. When using frames, if you want to load a page into a frame, set the target, to the name of the frame you want the page loaded into.

_blank   Load the link into a new blank browser window.

_parent   Load the link into the immediate parent of the document the link is in.

_self   Load the link into the same window the link was clicked in.

_top   Load the link into the entire window, replaces any frames that are being displayed.

Making your frames page your home page

After your frames page is working, you may want to make it your home page. To make your frames page your home page, use the FrontPage Explorer and:

Rename index.html to oldindx.html

Rename frmain.htm to index.html
