Creating Your Local FrontPage Web

Before creating your pages, you have to create your Local FrontPage Web on your hard drive.

1.   Create a directory on your hard drive for your GeoCities Web Sites called 'D:\GeoCities' (you can use any name, but these instructions use this name).
     
2.   From the Windows Start Menu choose the Programs sub-menu, select the Front Page group (sub-menu), and open Microsoft Front Page.
     
3.   The idea of this step is to get to 'Normal Web Template' dialog, to create a new FrontPage Web.
     
    If FrontPage comes up with the 'Getting Started With Microsoft Frontpage' dialog
     
   

 

 

a.   Go to the 'Create New Web' section of the dialog.
b.   Push (select) the 'Blank FrontPage Web' radio button.
c.   Press OK.
d.   The 'Normal Web Template' dialog should pop up.
     
    Otherwise (example you get the 'Open FrontPage Web' dialog), keep canceling out of things, until you have the 'FrontPage Web Explorer' open (probably with no web displayed).
     
   

 

 

a.   Drop down the FrontPage Explorer 'File' menu.
b.   Select the 'New' sub menu.
c.   Choose the 'FrontPage Web' option.
d.   The 'New FrontPage Web' dialog will pop up.
e.   Select the 'Normal Web' template.
f.   Press OK
g.   The 'Normal Web Template' dialog should pop up.
     
4.   Filling in the 'Normal Web Template' dialog to create your FrontPage Web.
     
   

 

 

a.   In the 'Web Server or File Location' field, type in (ignore drop down): D:\GeoCities
b.   Make sure 'Connect Using SSL' is unchecked.
c.   In the 'Name of New FrontPageWeb' type in your short geoaddress: hood1234
e.   Press OK.
f.   You will probably get a Message box:

FrontPage needs to convert this folder into a new FrontPage web by adding the files and folders necessary to support FrontPage features

Do you want to convert this folder to a FrontPage web?

Press Yes.

g.   The FrontPage web directories are created.
h.   The FrontPage Explorer should then open your web site 'hood1234' at 'D:\GeoCities\hood1234' (this is the directory on your drive).
     
5.   Rename the 'index.htm' file to 'index.html'
     
   

 

 

a.   In the FrontPage Explorer, drop down the 'View' menu
b.   Select the 'Folder View' sub-menu (the main view will change)
c.   Select the 'index.htm' file in the main view (click on the filename).
d.   Drop down the 'Edit' menu
e.   Select the 'Rename' sub- menu (the file 'index.htm' name in the main view will be enabled for editing)
f.   Type in the new 'index.html' name for the file.
     
6.   Open index.html (you can double click on it), and start creating your home page in the FrontPage Editor.
     
7.   If you have have existing files at GeoCities, you can import them into your local FrontPage Web, by using the FrontPage Import wizard.
