Thanks to J Bryant at WestHollywood/4511/, here are some tips for uploading a
Your lucky, this is a long weekend, so I get to play more.
I put the Banner Ad Manager on one of my pages at:
http://www.oocities.org/ResearchTriangle/Facility/1494/links.html
It works when I upload everything to GeoCities, I tested with MSIE 4.0 and Netscape 4.5 .
It doesn't work when I test browse the page from my hard drive (this is probably a java restriction in MSIE).
One other thing, the ad manager appears to load all images before it displays the first one. So it can take a while before you finally see it display (keep your image files small, and don't use too many).
This is what I did:
1) I copied my banners into the image sub-directory of my web on my hard drive.
2) I started FrontPage 98 and opened my page. I then inserted the Banner Ad Manager on my page (from the menu: Insert/Active Elements/Banner Ad Manager...).
3) I set the Width, Size, Link To fields. Then I used the Add button to add my 4 images:
images/junk.gif
images/junk01.gif
images/jumk02.gif
images/sbs1492.gif
4) I saved my page, and closed the frontpage editor.
6) I uploaded the files to GeoCities:
I uploaded my changed page (links.html) to GeoCities.
I uploaded the java class files to my _fpclass sub-directory at geocities:
_fpclass/fprotate.class
_fpclass/fprotatx.class
I uploaded my image files to my images sub-directory at geocities:
images/junk.gif
images/junk01.gif
images/jumk02.gif
images/sbs1492.gif
FrontPage web that includes Themes at GeoCities, it takes some work, but it can be done.
Do
not create Sub-Webs within your FrontPage Web. GeoCities restricts you to only 2 levels of
sub-directories, if you create a Sub-Web, you will exceed this limit.
The
built in publisher in the FrontPage Explorer has worked for some people, but may fail
trying to upload unsupported file types, if this happens use FTP or the MS Web Publisher
Wizard to upload the files from these directories.
You
will have to use subdirectories, it is usually best to create the sub-directories at
GeoCities before uploading. Visit The AnswerPoint for information on using subdirectories at GeoCities.
All
of the theme files are not necessary for the web page to work, but rather than figuring
out which one is which, you can upload all of them from the _themes directory in the
frontpage web.
The
longest part is always the first time that you upload the site. Once all of the main files
are there, it will be easier to update and add to the site. After all, you learn as you go
along.
The following is the list of directories to create and file types to upload. If it is incomplete, or you have any other suggestions or corrections for this page. Please let me know.
