Parents back stricter dress code

Herndon Middle School parents want students
to stop wearing pants that hang low around
the hips, oversized shirts and
open-heel shoes.

At a school PTA meeting this month Herndon
parents spoke out in favor of a stricter
dress code policy, but fell short of calling
for a school uniform. The PTA is forming a
committee next month that will look into
how to change the policy.

"We want to come up with a more stringent
dress code with defined guidelines, but we
want something students, parents and
faculty can live with," said Barbara Stroup,
Parent Teacher Association president. "We
want to eliminate oversized clothing and
open-heel shoes that aren't safe."

Stroup said she worries about open-heel shoes
that "are a safety hazard, particularly as
people walk up steps."
