The Carter Center in Atlanta, Ga., is a
nonprofit, nonpartisan public policy institute
founded by former U.S. President Jimmy
Carter and his wife, Rosalynn, in 1982. The
Center is dedicated to fighting disease,
hunger, poverty, conflict, and oppression
through collaborative initiatives in the areas
of democratization and development, global
health, and urban revitalization. At present,
the Center operates 13 core programs,
which have touched the lives of people in
65 countries, including the United States.
Peace Brigades International (PBI) is a unique grassroot organization exploring and
implementing nonviolent approaches to peacekeeping and support for basic human
rights. By invitation, PBI sends teams of volunteers who go into areas of political
repression and conflict. PBI provides protective international accompaniment for
individuals and organizations who have been threatened by political violence or who
are otherwise at risk. In this way, PBI enlarges the space for local activists to work
for social justice and human rights, while at the same time being non-partisan: not
telling them what to do, how to do it, or how their future should be formed.
Amnesty International's mandate includes:
To promote awareness of and adherence to the Universal Declaration of
Human Rights and other internationally recognized human rights
instruments, the values enshrined in them, and the indivisibility and
interdependence of all human rights and freedoms;
The
World Peace 2000 Coalition dedicated to helping promote the message
of a 24-hour worldwide cease-fire on January 1, 2000; a Declaration of Peace
culminating on January 1, 2000 as WORLD PEACE DAY; and the year 2000
as The INTERNATIONAL YEAR FOR PEACE ON EARTH. .
