"Ola!"

Portugal's Algarve
One of naturists best kept secrets?

I went to Portugal's Algarve (south coast)with my family last year at the end of October. We had never been to Portugal before and were delighted by the places, the weather, and most of all the Portuguese.
The Algarve beaches are justifably famous in their own right. But what I didn't know was how perfect they are for naturism.
Up to just a few years ago, there were no laws whatsoever regarding nudity on Portugeuse beaches. For some reason, however, laws were brought in effectively controlling it, but seemingly targetted at the main 'tourist' beaches.
That said, there are hundreds of smaller beaches and coves that are perfect. We stayed at a resort called Villamoura, about 20 mmiles west of Faro...the main city on the south coast. The next small town is called Olhos D'Agua with its own beach and smaller coves off to the left and right. Naturism was clearly tolerated here as I was greeted by a cheery wave or a 'good morning' by many of the local fishermen and dog-walkers. Being October, it was relatively quiet, but each cove had a mixed sprinkling of textile and naturist happily co-habiting.
There are several 'official' beaches in Portugal and the link below will take you to the Portuguese Naturist Asscociation's Web Site.
Here's an extract from a reply to an email I sent them asking about the tolerance.......

"In Portugal usually there's no problem in the naturist practice in the most of the small beaches or in less frequented beachs (in some of the big beaches there are normally a most frequented zone and in the less frequented sometimes people practice naturism). Normally nobody is offended by naturist practice but if someone reacted to it and it's not an official beach its better stopped the practice. In Algarve the most of the people are foreign people so the practice of topless is very usual and the naturism is tolarated in a lot of places, but it's better not to try on the village beaches which are very frequented. Its better, if you didn't know the beach, see how the other people stay. Yours, The Naturism(o) Team"
