There is one thing that people never
seem to be able to understand. Why would anyone want to wake up at 5 in the morning, just
to take a photograph of the sun rising over the Alps? Well, there's no real answer, except
that it's something that I like to do, and that photography is more than just a hobby for
me, but a passion. Some people think that I'm obsessive, and that I only think about
photography, but that's not true, it's just that every opportunity that I have to take a
nice photograph, I take one. One thing that I can say about photography is that it has
helped me to look much more at the small details, the small things that make a moment so
wonderful. For example the light coming down through the clouds, and silhouetting the
trees in the distance against huge storm clouds that are dark and menacing (See photo on
right). That's one of the many things that photography is about---capturing a moment and
being able to show it to others. Obviously, the ultimate fulfilment is to have people look
at your photographs in awe, look at them and proclaim "Wow!". Some people can't
believe that it's real, they can't believe that such beauty could exist, and they missed
it! Too many people don't see the world at the right time, at the times when the light is
'magical', when the light gives a unique perspective of the world.
I'm privileged because I have a dad that can advise me, that criticises
me, that tells me what is wrong with my photographs and what I can do to improve them.
That's probably why I have advanced so much technically and artistically (although
photography magazines have really helped me learn a lot---there's nothing like looking at
photographs by pro's to improve yours). When I think of the kind of equipment that I have
in comparison to what he had when he was my age, I understand how privileged I am.
All photographs featured on this website were scanned with a
Canon CanoScan 2700F, offering a maximum of 2720DPI of optical scanning resolution. The
scans were then saved under JPEG compression to minimise file size (and unfortunately
quality).
Photo above was taken with a Canon EOS 500, and my dad's Canon
100-300USM lens. The camera was mounted on a very small and flimsy tripod.
