The Car Page
George, during CCC service, circa 1939
Like many young people having a hard time during the depression, George spent a couple years in the Civilian Conservation Corps, in the Pennsylvania mountains. I love this pic for the jaunty pose, and dapper suit he wears. It must have been a special day, because I'm sure he didn't dress like that everyday. When I found this shot, I remembered the ones below, and thought it was a perfect illustration of the old adage that 'the more things change, the more they stay the same'.
Summer, 1971
George and Annie convinced me to buy this VW, new, instead of the used red '67 Mustang fastback that I really wanted. They convinced me by telling me they wouldn't loan me the money to get the 'Stang, and by arguing about the economy of owning a new car vs. a used one. Well, I wasn't crazy about getting the Bug, but it was sure better than the old Falcon I was driving then. In any case, I loved the Bug, and had a lot of fun with it. It ended up going through 3 engines over the course of 250,000 miles in its 12 year life. Not too bad for a car that cost only $1350 new, off the boat from Germany.
Senior Portrait, 1996
The last photo in this series was requested by Steve during his Senior Portrait session. The Cavalier was his first car, and he enjoyed the sporty look of it. This car had over 200,000 miles on it when he got it from me, and didn't have much life left in it, but he shined it up, and was happy to have anything that ran.
