Turtle
Cavern |
Once a land cave, this huge cavern has become a turtle
graveyard - full of turtle skeletons. Some romantist say that the turtles come to die in
this humongous cave when they get old due to the fact that there are turtle bones
everywhere. But the truth is more likely that they get lost in the many chambers of the
cave and simply drown.
|
It
is hard to describe the size and extent of the cave as I have only been in the cave as far
as 30 ft with a tiny torch. I would estimate the entrance to be 50 ft tall and 50 ft
wide. As you can see in the diagram, the cave extends upwards towards the centre of the
island and has many chambers - some only narrow enough for one diver. This is a great
place for cave divers.
|
Beautiful Green Hawksbill Turtles are one of the most
common sights around the island. A diver is virtually guaranteed of seeing at least 10 to
15 of these graceful creatures per dive as the island is a sanctuary for the gentle
turtles.
