There is a monument to Deacon Henry C. Cobb, Jr. in the Lothrop Hill Cemetery, located west of Barnstable, Massachusetts on Highway 6A. You can get more specific directions to the cemetery here. The historical marker reads, "Erected to the memory of Rev. John Lothrop, 1584-1653, and such first settlers who fill unmarked graves in this cemetery and at the "calves pasture." Mr. Lothrop was pastor of the Church of England at Egerton, 1611-1623, The Congregational Society at Southwark, London, 1624-1632, Confined Newgate Prison, 1632-1634, Scituate, 1634-1639. Barnstable, 1639-1653. He was a gentle, kindly man and beloved by all who knew him. Barnstable Tercentenary, 1939." Henry Cobb was the father of Mary Cobb, who married Jonathan Dunham, Deacon Jonathan Dunham's son. |

All three of these stones were well-weathered or boken, so I wrote down all the details I could make out. From left: 1) HERE LIES YE BODY OF M- HANNAH COBB - OF MR - COBB; 2) The right half of the stone is actually lying in the grass, I picked it up for the photo; 3) Footstones like this one for Hannan Cobb accompanied many headstones in New England; 4) Lichen was a big problem for many stones like this one for HANNAH COBB, DIED --25, A.D. 1776. Our friends at Spirited Ghost Hunting sent us a great link for Cape Cod Cemeteries - be sure to check it out! One of the graves below, which is located in the Lothrop Hill Cemetery, is one of three of the oldest surviving headstones in Cape Cod. You can also look up the meaning of many gravestone symbols - and the meaning of the word "consort" - on the Spirited Ghost Hunting site. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
