ABE'S AMRY TO HIT THE STREETS AGAIN
Tuesday, May 28 will be the kickoff for the third straight year of Abe’s Army, the popular SRRC training program that prepares beginning runners for Abe’s Amble 10k.
Abe’s Army was begun in 2000 as a way to encourage new runners to get involved with our sport and as a structured program to accomplish the goal of running a 10-kilometer race. With over 160 participants the past two years, Abe’s Army has exceeded all expectations and has brought an influx of new members into the SRRC. The Army has seen people who were not even runners two years ago now training for marathons.
The Army revolves around a simple but effective 12-week training program that slowly progresses people from walking or running short distances to running the entire 10k route. Participants are grouped with 8-10 runners of similar ability and are led in weekly group runs by a member of the SRRC. Each weekly session begins with a short talk on a running-related topic and then we hit the streets for a run. Each participant gets a daily training log that gives suggested activities and can be used to record daily workouts.
The fee for Abe’s Army is $30 for SRRC Members, $40 before 5/28 for non-members, $50 after 5/28 for non-members. Included in the fee is a 2002 membership in the SRRC ($15 value), entry into Abe’s Amble 10k ($16 value), a unique Abe’s Army t-shirt (DriRelease shirts this year!), the training log and weekly sessions, and the camaraderie of training with a bunch of great people. Athleticare, with its new facility at 3631 S. 6th Street (next to FitClub South), will once again host Abe’s Army. Packet pickup and in-person registration for the Army will take place on Thursday, May 23, 5-7 pm at Athleticare with the first Army session scheduled for Tuesday, May 28, 6:00 pm. Contact Tim Butler (217-544-5799 tim_j_butler@hotmail.com) for more details.
If you have been away from running for a while, or know someone who wants to experience the joy of accomplishing the goal of running a 10k, Abe’s Army is the program!
Group Leaders Needed For Abe’s Army
The Springfield Road Runners Club is looking for a few (actually many) good people to become group leaders for Abe’s Army 2002. We are hoping for two group leaders per group this year. Each group leader gets free entry to the 25th Abe’s Amble on Sunday, August 18 and a special Abe’s Army t-shirt. Best of all, group leaders get the satisfaction of helping new runners through a summer-long training program to accomplish the goal of running Abe’s Amble. You don’t need to be a personal trainer or sub 3:00 hour marathoner to be a group leader. All you need is the willingness to help new runners accomplish their goal.
This is one of the main programs for the Springfield Road Runners Club and we really need a great turnout of Club members as group leaders to make the program work. The Army will meet at 6:00 pm every Tuesday from May 28 through August 13. A group leader orientation session will be held on Thursday, May 23, 6:00 pm at Athleticare. You don’t need to be at that session to volunteer, but it might help answer any questions.
For more information, or to volunteer as a group leader, contact Tim Butler, 217-544-5799 or tim_j_butler@hotmail.com.
