Matrix-Page 2
There are people in this world that are obsessed with this star. There are those that are obsessed
with the MATRIX, a 1999 sci-fi action film starring
Keanu Reeves.
There are even people at the University
of Washington who have received college credit for
interpreting the philosophical underpinnings of this
movie.
Reeves has appeared in 35+ films. That is a huge
number for an actor who is only 36 years old. He has
starred in SPEED as will. The MATRIX and SPEED are
considered two of the biggest and best action blockbuster
of the 1990s. According to the Hollywood gossips, he has
few, if any, enemies in the film community. He's praised
consistently for his work ethic, his integrity, his
humility, his utter lack of Hollywood guile.
According to MATRIX co-star, Carrie-Anne Moss," Keanu has the ability to handle stress in a way that
is almost Zen-like." She added,
"I think he has Zen-like moments, and I think that,
absolutely, it affects the other actors he works with.
It affects me. You know, there's not one bit of the
movie-star ego in that guy...He's incredibly focused
and incredibly disciplined, and I mean unlike anyone
I've ever met."
Some critics have called Reeves "wooden" and
"robotic," Others disagree. I feel that he has
real talent and can definitely act. Just because
he does not express himself with vibrant facial
expressions and tones does not mean he cannot
deliver a part effectively.
He was born to an eccentric British costume designer
who moved to Paris when she was 14 and who sometimes
wore a peach-dyed crew cut. His father is
an Hawaiian-Chinese who left the family when Keanu
was two, Reeves has had a life filled with many
challenges and a lot of variety.
He was born in Beirut. Several years later, his mother moved the
family to Canada where Reeves spent his formative
years playing hockey and being challenged in
school. He was diagnosed with dyslexia, a learning
disorder which he eventually overcame. His mother
earned a living making costumes for musicians such
as Dolly Parton and Emmylou Harris.
The fact that he has recovered from a terrible
motorcycle accident shows up in subtle ways. There
are a couple tiny scars that you can barely see in
close ups. Occasionally, you can tell in the way he
moves his neck-just a little bit stiff and perhaps
in the way he walks-is there compensation there? If
you see him in SWEET NOVEMBER you can see a long
scar above the navel. None of the above take away
from the actor or the man-just adds a little note
to his persona.
This was in the Dallas Morning News 9/11/01:
Keanu Reeves: the gift that keeps on giving
Keanu Reeves has signed away a sizable back-end deal for two Matrix
sequels. The Wall Street Journal reports Mr. Reeves handed his profit-sharing points to the franchise's special-effects and costume-design teams. "He felt that they were the ones who made the movie and that they should participate," a movie executive says. It's not the first time Mr. Reeves has shared his movie spoils. For The Devei's Advocate, he shaved his salary by a few million so producers could afford Al Pacino, the Journal reports. But don't cry for Mr. Reeves' bank account: He was paid $10 million upfront for The Matrix and earned $35 million when the film became a hit.
