The SJS College Football Extravaganza

Welcome to the SJS College Football Page. These pages debuted on November 13, 1996 and have been growing and changing ever since. I have written up a brief history for those who are interested.

Who are we?

I am the Webmaestro, SJS, Steve St. John, the Head Expert. We are the collective experts on college football, mostly my friends, but I'm happy to open this up to friends of friends and complete strangers. All you need to be an expert is an interest and opinion about college football: an opinion about who should be #1 or who is going to beat whom this week.

What do you do here?

There are two main focuses of these pages during the regular season: the picks contest and the Consensus Home Page Poll. The picks contest is a friendly competition to see who can pick the winner of the most college football games this year. I select 10-20 interesting games each week, and the experts submit their predicted winners and scores. The standings of the contest are determined by the number of winners you pick, but we also keep statistics on which experts pick the scores nearly right most often.

The Consensus Home Page Poll grew out of my dissatisfaction with the AP and coaches in the way they rank the top 25. The main complaints are usually relying too much on preseason polls, consistently overrating certain teams (Southern Cal, Notre Dame), and consistently underrating certain teams (Florida, though that hasn't been a problem since 1994 or so). I post my top 25 every week, but I also make a consensus poll from top 25's submitted by visitors to these pages.

What else do you do here?

In addition, I also post a commentary nearly every week during the season. Some people even seem to read them. I get to pretend to be a sports columnist on these pages, in addition to pretending to be an AP voter and a sports talking head. Sometimes others submit guest commentaries as well.

Beyond that, I make preseason predictions, give out awards, select all-star teams, and in general immerse myself in college football here.

Who can take part?

Anyone. Just send me an email to let me know you're out there. In terms of the picks contest, you should try to make picks every week by the Thursday before the games. Submit top 25s and guest commentaries if you want, too.
