Synopsis created by Ito Nobutoshi & Stuart Dawson.
9 June 1998

One night, a girl has a dream; a book opens itself. Someone calls her and she finds herself on the top of a tall building near Tokyo Tower. With a number of cards and a strange animal around her, she utters something and then dives down from the building.

Title

The girl, Kinomoto Sakura, wakes up from the dream. She is a fourth grader of Tomoeda Elementary School and comes downstairs for breakfast, where her brother, Touya, meets her. He is always teasing her and today asks why she went on a rampage in her room. She tells him she was just walking around but he continues to say "How 'just walking', did you make a noise like a monster is wandering about?" He is a second grader of Seijou Highschool. One of Sakura's wishes is to grow as tall as a telegraph pole and stamp on him.

As if to settle the trouble, their father, Fujitaka, comes out of the kitchen. He's is a lecturer in archaeology and Sakura's favourite. Her mother passed away when she was only three. But with her father and brother, she never feels lonely.

Touya stands up from the table and is about to go to school to attend the morning training of his soccer club, which panics Sakura. She stuffs herself with breakfast to go to school with him, he does not wait for her. After passing under wonderful cherry trees, she catches up with her brother. Her aim is not him but his friend, Tsukishiro Yukito. She simply adores this gentle boy, who greets Touya and then Sakura, "Good morning. You're an early bird." Touya's cynical comment, "Yeah, she ate her breakfast within five minutes" is met by Sakura's kick.

Her sweet time ends abruptly when they reach her school. As he rides away, Yukito throws a candy to Sakura. This impressed not only Sakura but another girl. She is Sakura's best friend, Daidouji Tomoyo [voiced by Iwao Junko, Key]. She is not only bright and pretty but a daughter of a chairman of a big company. Tomoyo tells Sakura that she looked very cute, lost in love with a candy in her hands. "I should've taken your photo." Her hobby is to take photos and videos. Even today she is happy to tell Sakura she's got a new video camera and asks her to be a model; "There's nothing so interesting and cute as you are!" Sakura is very fond of her but has to admit she is a bit odd.

During her lesson, Sakura ponders over the dream she had and wonders if it was herself in the dream. Tomoyo finds a drawing on her notebook and wants to know what it is. But they conversation has to be stopped as the teacher asks Sakura to recite the textbook.

Sakura remains pensive during the training in her cheer-leading club and miscatches her baton. The girls wonder why she makes such easy mistakes from time to time when normally she is excellent at baton handling.

She is back home where no one is waiting for her. She senses someone in the basement but decides it was her imagination. But, when she opens the fridge for a cake, she definitely hears something from the basement.

Eye-Catcher

She can hear a weird noise. Can it be a burglar? She slowly goes down the staircase to examine the library in the basement but finds no one there. Then suddenly she finds out that a book is glowing. As if enchanted, she takes the book, "The Clow", in her hand. It is the very book she saw in the dream. The book unlocks itself and she opens the cover. The "book" turns out to be a container of cards. The card on the top has a word on it. She tries to pronounce it "Wi... Windy". [remember, English is only taught after 12].

Suddenly the cart emits a bright right and a strong wind whirls in the library to brow all the card out of the book. Mysteriously the cards are blown away even through the wall and to all over the town.

After the wind eases, the book glows again and a strange creature comes out of it. The creature thanks Sakura, in an Osaka accent, for waking it up. Sakura examines its body for batteries and switches without success. It introduces itself as Cerberus, the guardian of the book. Its job is to keep an eye on the cards in the book... which are all gone! Sakura's card, "Windy", is no more than consolation.

Sakura again stuffs herself with dinner and takes a cake to her room, where Cerberus tries to "sense" where the cards are now. It has no success and begins to explain to Sakura what is going on.

The book contained "Clow Cards", made by a legendary sorcerer Clow Lead. Each of them is powerful and alive so that no ordinary human can handle it. So Clow created the book and put the guardian on the cover. "Anyway, we have to bring the cards back, ok?" "We?" "It was you who blew the cards away with the wind." "But it was you who should have kept an eye on it." "Well.... I've been asleep..." "How long?" "About 30 years..." The strange noise Sakura heard was its snore.

Cerberus thinks Sakura has some magical power as she could open the book and bestows magic power on her. "Key, The key of the seal. Here is one who wants to contract with you. Her name is Sakura. Key, give her power." With this spell, a small key becomes a stick and Cerberus tells Sakura to take it. "Excellent! A card captor is born!"

Sakura is sure she is not up to the role as a card captor but Cerberus has no intention of listening to her. When both blame each other for the loss of the cards, a strong wind blows in and a gigantic bird flies above the house. Cerberus recognises it; it's the Clow Card "Fly". This is the first target for Card Captor Sakura!

Sakura thinks it is too big for her to battle against and the bird's power is certainly strong enough to blow her away. Cerberus tells Sakura to use her magic key as it has told her. "Key, with the power of darkness, under the contract, I, Sakura, order you. Release!" Cerberus tells her that Fly's attribution is Wind, therefore, Windy should be enough to capture it.

But Sakura and Cerberus can do nothing before the power of Fly. Suddenly an idea occurs to Sakura, who jumps on to Fly. "Wind, be a chain to confine. Windy!" With this spell, Windy is released from the card and restricts Fly. It's now or never. "Be back to what you should be. Clow Card!"

Sakura manages to capture Fly but is not happy as she may have been killed in the combat. Cerberus is, on the other hand, infinitely optimistic and tells her to use Fly right away. To her surprise, Fly makes her stick a "flying stick" and she can enjoy wonderful flight in the night sky.

"Let's be nice friends, Card Captor Sakura." "Sure... oh, I'm telling you I have no intention of being a card captor!"

Leave it to Kero-chan

[This is an otakish guide to the anime by Cerberus. In this episode, it explains her school uniform.]
