A day in July 2011. It's a hot summer day with a clear sky. But high, high in the sky, or in space, a number of ships and aircrafts are attacking a huge object floating, apparently in vain.
Here on the Earth, Hibari, Suzume, Tsugumi and Tsubame have come to Kanda Myoujin Shrine after the school with their Pata-Pi. It is the last day of the first term of their school. While Tsugumi goes crazy over the expectation of the summer vacation, Hibari wonders if Suzume means to do "the thing" again. To Suzume, it is one of their annual events and they should do it as usual. Hibari, who appears reluctant, talks to Tsubame in hope, "You don't want to do it, right?" but she doesn't mind. "The thing" is to compare their school reports. Hibari knows Suzume is confident of her victory. No wonder. Suzume had got a all-five [in Japanese school reports each subject such as Japanese, science and mathematics are often evaluated in the five levels, with five being the top]. Hibari suspects there is a penalty to the loser and Suzume confirms it. The one with the worst report gets a dekopin [snapping someone's forehead with one's index or middle finger] from everyone else. It sounds painful to Hibari but wonderful to Tsugumi, who has been training to improve her dekopin with her special handmade dummy. She demonstrates her powerful dekopin on the dummy. But it is so powerful the dummy flies off and hits Tsubame. Tsugumi is to quick to apologise, "I'm very sorry. Are you OK?" Tsubame stands up and answers as unemotionally as usual, "I'm all right." But a slight movement of her eyebrows is a sure sign of her anger, which sends the offender into a panic. Hibari seizes this opportunity to persuade Suzume not to do the competition this year. As Tsugumi also insists so, hoping to change the subject away from dekopin, Suzume agrees with them. Tsugumi suggests to go to a burger shop and they walk off to it, accordingly.
At the burger shop, they discuss the plan to go somewhere together during the vacation. Hibari wants to go to the sea. Tsugumi tells her she won't be available at the beginning of August because of a "contest". Suzume suspects it is an "idol contest" but Tsugumi, with a red face, insists it's a karate one. Suzume tells Francheska to scan its data base and it comes up with "Akihabara Viva Viva Idol Contest". Suzume, who has been silent as usual [but carefully removing pickles from her burger ^_^;;], asks Hibari if they go to the sea. Suzume tells her that they will and suggests to ring up Kamome [She is now back in Osaka. Get the drama CD "Spring 2011" for the detail.] Tsubame thinks it is a good idea because "she is so mean she won't call us."
Kamome is selling takoyaki on the street with Billiken. An old man with very long hear and beard comes up to her stall. She knows him, "A living legend, Takoyaki Sen'nin [Takoyaki Saint?]!!" It is said stalls that he approved will prosper. He starts tasting her takoyaki and says it's really delicious. Kamome is jubilant to hear this and people who have been watching rush to buy some themselves. Of course, there is no Saint. The old man is Shimafukurou and he and Kamome plotted all as an advertisement.
Kamome's handy phone rings then. It is from Hibari. But Hibari has to hung up very quickly as Petit-ange tells her a handy phone is not allowed in the burger shop. Yet it takes some time until Kamome realises the line is disconnected and stops talking ^_^;; By the time she comes back to herself, Billiken has sold all takoyaki off and is ready to go home.
Coming out of the burger shop, Hibari, whose blood type is O, sums up what has been decided. The trip will be sometime good between the beginning to the middle of August and the destination is somewhere nice between Tokyo and Osaka. But to Tsugumi, whose blood type is A, it means nothing has been decided. Suzume, whose blood type is B, wasn't really listening to Hibari and Tsubame, who shares her blood type with Hibari, thinks it'll work out fine. Tsugumi has no choice but to give in. Now Suzume is off to a world-wide trip of visiting summer houses of her family but will come back to Japan in time for the trip.
Days have passed and it is now in August. While Tsubame is cooking hot cakes for their snack, Hibari receives a phone call from Suzume. She is now back in Japan and relaxing on the beach in Karuizawa [Karuizawa is a famous summer resort surrounded by mountains. The Sakurajousuis apparently have created a private "sea" there]. Hibari tells Kamome said she will join the trip. Kamome also said there would be a surprise for them; her breasts have grown up very quickly, "the days of Suzume's domination will be over!" While Hibari bemoans lack of the progress of her own, the news surprises Suzume for a moment. But she soon becomes doubtful [Although the figures for bust aren't given, the girls at least became taller. For example, Hibari was 139cm tall in the TV series but is now 142cm in the movie]. Hibari is unaware that something brown [Enoken's ear ^_^;;] is listening to their conversation.
Then she rings up Tsugumi as she enjoys the hot cake. She is doing two contests at one time. As soon as she finishes a song at the idol contest, she runs off to the karate one. She changes her clothes on the way in a curtain which Tetsuro holds for her. She is running back to the idol contest when her phone rings. She is too busy to answer properly and Tetsuro does it for her. Hibari, who cannot understand Tetsuro very well, passes the phone to Den-suke.
Hibari has phoned to ask her if she likes to come with them to a swimsuit bargain in Shinjuku. Now that Tsugumi, as well as Suzume, is not available, she will go with Tsubame alone. She asks Tokijirou [Hibari's father] to take them to Shinjuku. When they leave home, Hinako [Hibari's mother] asks Tsubame to do some shopping for her, too, and hands a shopping list.
Their car is trapped in an unexpected traffic jam. Petit-ange flies off to see what is happening. Hibari complains about the heat in the car, which also seems unpleasant to Tsubame. Petit-ange comes back and reports that they are checking water and gas lines as some vertical gaps have appeared on the road. Tsubame notices that the railway is also disrupted. Their car eventually gets out of the jam and leaves for Shinjuku.
Miyama is studying something on her computer, which at the end of the analysis draws a circle on the map of Akihabara on the screen. Its center is Hibari's school. This is what she suspected. She sees some men in black suits from the window and knows they have been watching her from a distance. Then someone knocks the door of her lab. "Come in. I've been waiting for you." A middle aged man with a few guards comes into the room. Miyama knew, ever since she cracked their computer system, this is all plotted by them. They let her steal the data and waited for her to analyse it. The man admits all and reveals more. It was Jun's idea. Jun comes into the room and tells Miyama she plotted this because, if she had asked her directly, Miyama wouldn't have collaborated with them. And she was right. Now that Miyama knows its content, she cannot go back. She agrees to help them and tells them to gather "the girls" first.
Hibari, Tsubame and Tokijirou arrive at the swimsuit bargain. Hibari is really excited while Tsubame remains cool as usual. Hibari picks up a pink one but thinks it is too small her. Then it comes to her that it may suits Suzume. Suzume has been choosing one herself but just found Enoken hiding between the swimsuits when Hibari tells her to try the pink swimsuit on. Tokijirou, seeing there is nothing he can do there, tells them he will wait for them in the smoking area near the lift. After putting Tsubame into the fitting room, Hibari continues to look for her own.
Enoken escapes from the swimsuit section and comes to near the lift where Tokijirou is smoking. Then suddenly a girl appears from the lift. It's Nishiurawa Uzura [the girl who loves "slender-breasted" girls and chased Kamome and Hibari in Eps 8 of the TV series ^_^;;]. In a self-complacent over-acting manner, she bitterly bemoans the development of Kamome's breasts. Then she suddenly calms down and walks away with her Pata-Pi after greeting Tokijirou.
Tsubame comes out of the fitting room. Hibari thinks the new swimsuit suits her very well although Tsubame thinks it's a little too big around the chest. Then Hibari sees Enoken approaching them and fears Uzura is also around. Unfortunately she was right. Uzura starts talking to her and keeps talking. Then it occurs to Hibari, given Uzura's taste, letting her see Tsubame in the swimsuit may turns out be fatal. So she snatches Tsubame at the wrist and runs away. But it was too late. The instant Uzura sees Tsubame's body as they run away, she falls in love with her. Now a great chase starts in the department store. After some struggle, Hibari and Tsubame manages to escape the swimsuit section and goes out of the building, leaving Tsubame's clothes and the price tag of the pink swimsuit to Tokijirou, who feels really miserable.
Back on the street, Hibari doesn't know how they should go home. The railway is still out of service and Tsubame is in the swimsuit. Fortunately she finds Tokijirou's car waiting for them near the station and gets in it with Tsubame. The car starts off but Tokijirou remains silent. Hibari thinks her father is sulking because they left him at the store. Tsubame notices that the car is air-conditioned when Den-suke, who has been toying Tokijirou's hair, somehow removes his face off, I mean, his mask. It isn't Tokijirou but the middle-aged man who was with Miyama earlier. He sprays hypnotic gas set in the rear seats to the girls. As they falls asleep, the man smiles over the success of his operation. He doesn't know, however, Uzura is chasing his car on a bicycle.
Tsugumi is dejected in a park in the evening because she turned up in the karate contest in her idol costume. To her surprise, Jun, in karate wear, appears and says to her, "Then, shall we redo the final?" It was Jun who were supposed to fight against Tsugumi at the final. But Tsugumi is not interested. So Jun has to change her tactics. She calls Hatoko, who sings on a small stage set on a truck her new song "Hot Spice" exclusively for Tsugumi, who is now in heaven. Then the truck leaves the place and Tsugumi has no choice but to follow.
As reported in TV, the anomaly of the Akihabara ground continues to grow and wide range of public services are disrupted. Suzume comes back home from Karuizawa in her sparrow-shape zeppelin. She is surprised to see all the troubles Akihabara is now suffering from. The heliport of her home is surrounded by a number of men but she thinks they are just welcoming her.
In a dream, Hibari is at the foot of a hill, a very familiar scene to her. As usual, her prince is there but with a very cruel smile on his face.
She wakes up and finds herself in a small room. Tsubame also regains her consciousness, followed by Tsugumi and Suzume. They are monitored through a camera by the middle-aged man and the three ladies. Jun has been gathering data of the girls as taught by Miyama. Miyama wants to analyse the brain wave pattern of the girls because a Diva is summoned by the spirit of an Anima Mundy enhanced by her Pata-Pi. If the exact pattern is known, it might be possible to summon Divas artificially by manipulating the girls' emotion. But Miyama's explanations are too difficult to Jun and Hatoko ^_^;;
Now the middle-aged man cuts in and starts talking to the four girls thought the intercom. First he apologises to them for the rather violent methods he used to invite them here. His apology is, however, far from enough to calm Suzume and Tsugumi's anger. Tsubame wants to know his aim. In short, the man wants to use their power as Anima Mundy to tackle the current problem of Akihabara. He offers more explanation and tells them to move to another room.
In the mean time, exhausted Uzura is still on her bike with Enoken but, as she has lost the sight of the car, is riding on it almost blindly. Enoken finds the car in front of a building which somehow seems familiar to her ^_^;;
The four girls discuss the situation, which does not look too good. Tsugumi tells the others that, when they open the door, she'll attack them to let them to escape. But her plan turns out too optimistic. The man comes with more than a handful of tough-looking guards. He says he has no intention to harm the girls but won't let them escape. Then he introduces the three women to the girls.
Before they get out of the room, an huge explosion is heard. It's Uzura's attack with a bazooka. She mounts an offensive almost indiscriminatingly. The four girls seize the opportunity and try to escape and Suzume leads them out of the room. But, as soon as she gets out of the door, Uzura's missile shaves her. Uzura finds Tsubame and runs to her. Not surprisingly, Suzume is furious about the indiscriminating manner of her attack but surprised to see Uzura's gun is soft. She says her father made it for her from PET bottles or old newspaper [it seems Uzura's father is ecological-minded and recycles various things into weapons to her ^_^;; BTW, he is an engineer of Sakurajousui Heavy Industries.]
Tsugumi reminds them they should escape first. Uzura resumes her outrageous attack, which is so merciless Tsugumi and Suzume sympathise with their enemy. Uzura suddenly remembers and tells them that the word "Keishichou [Tokyo Metropolitan Police]" is written at the gate of the building. Now the other girls know they are fighting against someone they shouldn't. Tsubame, who somehow meet the middle-aged man, interrupts, "He wants us to listen to him". The man admits he should have introduced himself first. He is Mr Ootaki of the Security Section of the Police and Jun tells them the three women have been helping them.
Jun takes Tsubame to the women's changing room within the Police Station. She thought she can't stay in her swimsuit so long and helps Tsubame to wear her old clothes. They are a little too big for Tsubame but she looks rather nice in them. Then Jun tries to put a pendant around her neck. Tsubame gets alarmed and steps backward. Jun assures it is an ordinary pendant Miyama and she made. Tsubame agrees to wear it, which is a pendant of a swallow [that is, 'tsubame']. She meekly says, "Thank you."
In the briefing room, Ootaki is explaining the situation to Hibari, Tsugumi and Suzume. Uzura is also in the room. The anomaly was first noted last month and they have found a big fault is developing deep under the ground. Hibari wants to know what will happen if things go on like this. Miyama answers to the question. By the end of August, an area around Akihabara with a radius of 500m will be floating in the air. Eventually Akihabara will be thrown into space. This is too shocking for the girls to believe.
Then Tsubame comes in with Jun. She thinks, by shielding the gravity and creating a repulsive force field, it is possible. She concludes they are telling the truth. Now the girls believe it but don't think they, ordinary junior high school students, can do anything about it. Ootaki tells one more thing. The center of the floating area is Akihabara Third Junior High School. Hibari now gets the message; this is to do with her Prince but can't understand why he, who said he'd wait for hundreds or thousands of years, should do such a thing. Tsubame again gives the answer. It is done by Avigor, the computer with artificial intelligence to control Primum Mobile. It was build to materialise Crane's image so that, even while he is asleep, it has been gathering materials to expand Primum Mobile. That is, as long as Crane is in Primum Mobile, Avigor will never cease to function. Suzume suggests to attack Primum Mobile with missiles or something but Ootaki reveals they already tries it without success two weeks ago when Primum Mobile was observed. Now they lost its sight and the only hope is Anima Mundy, who can resonate with Crane in the castle. Rise of the ground by tens of centimeters has proved enough to disrupted today's city. What will happen if such a large area disappears into space? Ootaki concludes it. "You'll cooperate with us, won't you?"
He adds one thing in an audible murmur. "I wish you didn't refuse to go with him at that time..." This infuriates Tsugumi and Tsubame but he ignores them and tells the meeting is over for the day and the girls can go home now.
At the car park underneath the police building, the girls get into polices cars to be escorted to their home. Jun hands a bag of vegetables(?) etc to Tsubame. Ootaki has got them precisely according to the shopping list Hinako gave to Tsubame. Jun thinks he feels guilty of bringing them here forcibly. But it does not soften Tsubame or Hibari. They gets in the police car without a word to him.
Now the issue is, at least partly, made public and the state of emergency is declared in the area around Akihabara. Tokijirou has been watching the TV and finds his home comes under it when Hibari and Tsubame come home. Hinako welcomes them and asks what they had to do with the Police. Hibari doesn't know how to explain the situation to her parents. Tsubame hands the bag to Hinako, who decides not to touch the subject any more. But Tokijirou wants to know. Perhaps Hibari and her friends have to go again? Hinako snatches him away from the girls immediately and tells him off. She thinks Hibari doesn't need any more trouble from them; one from the Police is enough. It is Tsubame who speaks up. "It won't be like that time, when we were the first grader." Hibari also assures them they will be all right. All her parents can do is pretend to be assured. Tokijirou deftly switches the subject, "But never leave me alone in the shop again." Not only Hibari but Tsubame apologises to him.
That night a nightmare of her prince in agony wakes Hibari up. But Tsubame's caring words calms her down. "Don't worry, Hibari. I'm with you. You're not alone."
Three days later. The evacuation has been going reasonably well and Akihabara is now almost empty. The news is also heard by Kamome in Osaka. Shimafukurou asks why she isn't going to Akihabara. She tells him she wants to keep her business running here. He further asks why she is so keen to earn money now that she has bought back her old home. This certainly make her think about her money, probably for the first time. "You're right. What in the world am I saving for?" Shimafukurou tells her not to worry about her inability to fuse with her Pata-Pi. He's got an idea.
Jun, Miyama and Hatoko are having tea. They half criticise and half sympathise with Ootaki. It must have been his tactics to mention about the incident of six month ago but it also upset the four girls. If they find they are traced even now [the pendant Jun gave Tsubame has a small transmitter in it], their anger would explode.
The Hanakoganeis are ready to evacuate themselves and watching news report on TV. Hibari decides to go out for a walk but Tsubame prefers to stay. She also leaves den-suke home as it is having a nap with Petit-ange.
Hibari walks through the empty town but meets Suzume and Hibari, who have also come out for a walk. They sit in a small park and talk about their dear town. Suzume compares with the current evacuation with one during the last war, about which she heard from Sebastian. The evacuation during war was to come back after the war. But this time, there will be no place to come back. Suzume's comment triggers something in Hibari. She understands the situation but not the intention of her price. She also knows she is not too good at thinking. So going to Primum Mobile is the best thing she can do now. But her heroic determination is met by rather subdued approval from the other two girls. They know they can't do too much because, unlike Hibari and Tsubame, they cannot fuse with their Pata-Pi.
There comes Tsubame with Petit-ange and Den-suke. Apparently Den-suke started to cry why it could not find Hibari when it woke up. She has also got a message from Kamome. She is coming to Akihabara with Soul-Machine Fusion Assistant System, which Shimafukurou has developed. The news excites Tsugumi and Hibari. They can fuse, too!? Ootaki has been watching the girl on a bridge from a distance. He knows, even if the girls agree to go, no one, including himself, cannot guarantee their safety.
The four girls are on their way to a public bath [water supply has been disrupted so that they can't have a bath at home]. They are followed by Kamome... or something that looks like her ^_^;; There is no one else at the public bath but the girls enjoys the relaxing time. Hibari suddenly stands up to show her new swimsuits. Now that their planned trip to the seaside is abandoned, why not wear it now!? Tsubame seems appalled but Suzume shares the sentiment with Hibari. She is also wearing her swimsuit.
They come out of the public bath in yukata. Tsubame, raised in France, finds it rather difficult to walk in it and lifts up her skirts. Now the next essential item for summer is firework and they head for their school. Unfortunately the school gate is locked. Suzume puts some fireworks around the lock and blows it away. Now they can go into the school ground. But, because Suzume used most of the fireworks they brought, all they have now are some small senkou-hanabi. So the girls, including Uzura who has now come out of her "Kamome Costume", decide to enjoy them. Tsugumi tells Tetsuro to light them. The fireworks finishes silently. As the girls starts clear up the place, Tsubame tells others "Let's go now." Uzura is determined to take the role of Kamome but Tsugumi thinks she will come here any time now.
Ootaki, still watching them from a distance, checks Jun and others in the headquarter if the tracer is working fine. The girls come to the rooftop of the school. They are amazed at the number of the stars they can see [because of the power cut in the area, the sky is much darker than usual]. There appears Kamome with Billiken. Tsugumi and Suzume want "that thing" immediately but Kamome hands her special takoyaki to them as souvenir. Then, urged by the two, Kamome produces the Soul-Machine Fusion Assistant System. As soon as they see it, the excitement vanishes from Tsugumi and Suzume. It is a weird-looking mask of an animal(?) [apparently smelly, too ^_^;;] and they refuse to wear it. Tsugumi declares she will fuse with Tetsuro with her guts. Kamome is dubious about her mentalistic idea but surprisingly Tsubame is positive. She says the Fusion is a matter of spirits of them and their Pata-Pi. Besides Primum Mobile is calling Anima Mundy right now. So they can do it. Hibari concludes, "Let's go together!" This sends Uzura into a panic, who wants to go with them. Tsubame gently assures her they'll come back soon and hands her pendant to her, "Keep this for me." Uzura is now persuaded and decides to wait for them. She tells the girl to come back before nine, as written in their code of the summer vacation. Hibari is sure they will.
Now the girls climb up to the highest point of the building and look up the sky [this is the coolest shot of the movie]. Light surrounds them and their fusion starts. Ootaki tells Jun to trace the light, which must be pointing to Primum Mobile. But all the monitors are out of control due to the interference from outside. He knows it is Avigor that did it. In the light, the girls complete the fusion and soar up into the sky as Diva. Ootaki tells Jun again to trace them but the monitor indicates they are still on the rooftop [probably they are monitoring Tsubame's pendant]. Ootaki bitterly deplores his powerlessness, "We are not even allowed to help the girls..."
The girls approach Primum Mobile, which looks different from what they saw last time. With a little hesitation, they go into it. Tsugumi asks Hibari where the prince's room is. Hibari cannot remember as the interior of Primum Mobile has been desolated a lot. Then two monsters begin to attack them. Tsubame thinks it is another indication of the malfunction of Avigor. She tells Hibari, because the monsters are what Cerberus and Skeleton has evolved, they have to beat them to reach Crane's room. Cockatrice also joins to attack the girls.
As they take refuge in the barrier Suzume create, Tsubame tells Hibari and Suzume to go ahead to Crane's room while she and the other two girls can take care of the three monsters here. Hibari hesitates a bit but Tsugumi tells her to trust the her, the leader. Her declaration of the leadership is met by fierce opposition from Suzume and Kamome but Tsugumi insists so as she is the eldest [by months ^_^] of the five. In the end all agrees to go with Tsugumi's plan.
Hibari and Tsubame fly off to the prince's room. Tsubame asks Hibari if she knows the way to the room. Hibari, with her type-O blood, is optimistic, "I'm not sure but I feel I know it." Tsubame, the same blood type, agrees.
The awesome battle between the three Alvatars and the three Diva goes on. But eventually the girls beat them. In the meantime, Hibari and Tsubame reach Crane's room. It is a deep cylinder-like hole and its wall is covered with hundreds of TV screen. Crane is sleeping on a bed at the bottom. Hibari cannot help jumping into the room and gets trapped. Tsubame comes to rescue her. She tells Tsubame that Crane has been watching various events on the Earth. Avigor is a self-controlling computer to make Crane's image into reality. Now Hibari knows his nightmare is the source of the trouble and decides to destroy all the TV here. "My Prince, there is no good in watching things like this." Tsubame agrees with her and starts destroying them herself. Then the other girls catch up. Hibari asks them to destroy the TV sets and Suzume, a specialist of destruction ^_^;;, has a good idea. They connect all the TV together and put excess power into them. All the TV sets are blown into pieces while Kamome has reprogrammed Avigor as Shimafukurou told her.
As seeing the pieces of the TV sets fall down, Tsugumi wonders what is the Prince after all. Suzume thinks maybe a prince can be a prince only with a princess. Kamome wants to know, if Crane is the prince, who's the princess? "Is it Hibari?" Tsubame answers, "Hibari is... yes, it is Hibari." Hibari, who has been silent, looks up and tells the others with a smile, "Let's go home. Back to Akihabara!"
As they fly back to the Earth, Kamome asks if any of them let her stay for the night. Hibari invites her to her home. Suzume and Tsugumi also want to stay together. They have saved their beloved home town, the place to come back.
ED[In the ED, the girls' safe return is received by Jun, Miyama and Hatoko to send them to heaven. Ootaki, also there, phones Hibari's parents up to bring the happiest tears into Hinako's eyes. This is really nice, IMHO. In the TV series, Hibari's parents suffered a lot from their daughter's fate but there was no scene where they welcome her dearest daughter back.]
