A boy is about to fly with an odd-looking hang glider. Two boys are watching the boy, Tasuke. They are envious because Tasuke is enjoying complete freedom as all his family members are away abroad. The hang glider is an ancient Chinese one which his father has sent to him. But his attempt ends up in diving to the lake, or failure. The two boys, Takashi and Koichirou, who had half expected the failure, walk away without helping him.
OPTasuke receives a letter from his father in China. In the envelop is a letter and an octagon ring.
He goes into the house shouting, "I'm home!", to which he knew no one would answer.
After having a bath, he reads the letter while he cooks his dinner. According to the letter, the ring is called Shitenrin [Ring to Support Heaven]. Legends say only those with a pure heart can see light in it and will be given the protection of heaven. Tasuke tries looking through the ring, which was hollow a few moments ago now emits mysterious light. Then the ring starts to tremble and a girl emerges from its light. Frightened Tasuke runs away in to the kitchen.
The girl begins to introduce herself and then realises her "master" isn't here. She finds him in the kitchen. As he, still frightened, leans back to the cooker, its fire burns his clothes. The girl dashes herself against Tasuke to save him and throws the cooker away... along with his dinner.
She introduces herself as Shugo-Getter [The Moon Spirit of Protection] Shaorin. She is predestined so that she will never leave her "master", like the Moon around the Earth, to protect him. She asks him to call her Shao and then wants to know what his name is. "My name is Shichiri Tasuke". The name somehow deeply impresses her, "What a wonderful name!"
She declares she will protect him from anything such as the attack or assassins from the hostile countries. She finds the security of the house is rather loose and goes out of the room to check. Left alone, Tasuke rethinks what has happened. She came out of the ring. That means what his father said in the letter is true!
In the meantime, Shao summons Uringun [an army of small fairy-like carpenters] to reinforce the house. Surprised Tasuke accidentally switches the TV on. Shao, seeing a guy in TV with a gun, throws Tasuke to safety and summons Shaki [artillery], which fires to destroy the TV set as well as a part of the house. While Shao is relieved to see Tasuke is now safe, a part of ceiling drops because of the explosion and hits him in the head to make him unconscious.
Eye CatcherTasuke gets up in the morning. He recollects his strange dream in which an odd girl came to make a mess of his dinner and house. A cup of coffee served by the very girl makes him realise it wasn't a dream at all. Shao has been cooking gorgeous Chinese meal for his breakfast. To get out of this incredible situation, he decides to go to school immediately. Shao, not knowing what a school is, insists to accompany him but Tasuke refuses.
Shao reluctantly obeys to his order but summons Rishu from Shitenrin. The little Hoshigami [spirit of a star] cannot speak but can send messages to Shao from anywhere. As Shao tells Rishu to take care of him, she clings to Tasuke's hair without him knowing it.
The fact she cannot be with Tasuke worries Shao so much she decides to go to school herself in the end. To Shao the "school" appears to be a very strange place, "everyone is wearing the same clothes and doing the same thing..." As she investigates it, she comes across to the science class where the teacher is about to dissect a frog. She breaks into the room and begs for his mercy. She even offers her own life for it. The innocent and unfortunate teacher has no choice but let the frog go.
After further investigation, she comes to a conclusion; this must be a compulsory training center for children! She is now determined, for her pride as Shugo-Getten, to save Tasuke from the school.
At the lunch break, Koichirou tells Tasuke that a girl in a strange costume has been witnessed at various places in the school. Takashi can add that she is said to be extremely cute. Tasuke's suspicion is confirmed when he sees Shao, covered with dirt, smiles at him from a tool space under the staircase. He drops a coin and pretends to look for it to get into the tool space. Koichirou and Takashi see something [Rishu] on the back of Tasuke's head but are not sure what it is.
In the tool space, Shao tells him she has come to let him escape. She has dug a long tunnel from the outside. "Let's go home." Tasuke is annoyed and shouts at her "How can I leave the school?"
Shao wonders why he cannot go home and comes to another wrong conclusion; they must take an mean advantage of his weakness! She summons Uringun and orders them to dismantle the building.
Tasuke, unhappy and unaware of Uringun's activity around him, comes to a toilet. Just when he is about to undo his trousers, Rishu, who is a girl after all, pulls his hair with a blushed face to stop him. He puts her outside of the cubicle angrily.
The students are evacuating the building but some, including Koichirou and Takashi, are trapped inside as the entrance is blocked by a heap of rubble. Shao waves from the mouth of the tunnel she made to guide them to safety. Takashi's gratitude is more than appropriate; it is obvious to everyone, expect Shao, that he has fallen in love.
All the students have come out to the ground before the building finally collapses. But Koichirou notices Tasuke isn't among them. Shao tries to go back through the tunnel but Takashi stops her; it's too dangerous. But her own danger doesn't mean anything to Shugo-Getten before her master's. Shao crawls the tunnel back to the school.
Tasuke has relieved himself and tries to put his trousers back on. Then the door opens. To his surprise, everything around the cubicle has gone. He manages to cling on to the toilet seat which a lean drainage tubing barely supports. Koichirou and Takashi are not particularly worried. For them, it's just another dramatic situation Tasuke always finds himself in.
The toilet seat eventually breaks because of Tasuke's weight and he falls towards the fround. A pair of hands hold his finger. To Tasuke's dismay, it is Rishu, who is now holding it with all her might. Seeing that she is about to give in, Tasuke shouts at her to let him drop. Otherwise she will fall, too. Rishu, who has been told by Shao to "take care of Tasuke", has no intention to let him go and calls her master's name for help.
Shao comes back to the surface and sees Tasuke in danger. Trying to hide his underware from Shao, he pulls Rishu strongly which is more than she can bear. As they fall down to the ground, Shao summons Gun'nanmon [a giant guardian] and orders him to save Tasuke. He does so by clapping his hands to catch Tasuke between them. It was fortunate that Tasuke wasn't smashed to death.
Tasuke is furious. Shao's careless acts endangered not only him but tiny Rishu and injured Shao herself. He angrily tells Shao off and walks away. Rishu, in his hands, tearfully pleads with Tasuke for forgiveness. Tasuke knows what she wants to say and that Shao did mean well. He asks Rishu to send his true feeling to Shao, "Thank you", which brings happy tears to Shao's eyes.
They go home together on Gun'nanmon's hands. Tasuke tells her not to come to school again until she understands this world. She obeys it and vows to learn about this world as soon as possible to protect him properly.
