A cello concert is being held in the grounds of the Kamui Shrine. The player is Kamui Nami, a 14 year-old girl in a priestess costume. The audience, probably local people, are very much impressed with her wonderful performance. Her mother, who stands a little away, also seems satisfied. Nami finishes her performance and leaves the stage. But she trips at the steps of the stage to cause a big laugh in the audience [she seems as genetically unfortunate as Shinobu in Love Hina ^_^;;].
OPNami is back in the private area of the shrine. She is mortified but her mother, Misaki, thinks it was a good fan-service for the audience. As people are not so pious as they use to, shrines have to do anything to attract "customers". Nami says, "If so, you should pay for her performance at least." Misaki is, however, shrewd enough to switch the subject, "Hey, look! According to this horoscope, Aries will meet some nice people this week." The girl seems to be fundamentally obedient and is talked by Misaki to store her old text books to the storehouse before tomorrow, the start of the new school year. Misaki does not fail to tell her to bring a special golden sake cup for wedding ceremonies when she comes back.
The prospect of meeting "nice people" preoccupies Nami and she trips again while she takes her old textbook to the storehouse. There is no audience around to laugh at but a girl with brown hair is there, "You tripped again!?" She is Sumeragi Uruka, or Uuchan. "Tripping twice in less than thirty minutes... Are you really 9th grader from tomorrow?" Despite her unkind words, she starts picking up Nami's textbooks and offers to help to carry them for Nami. They are friends ever since they are very small. Nami is pleased as she was a little scared to go into the dark storehouse alone. Uruka wants Nami not to call her Uuchan any longer now that she is a high school student [Uruka is a year older than Nami] but Nami is refractory.
They comes to the storehouse and Nami opens the door. Its inside is certainly dark but, Uruka thinks, it is not scary at all as you can switch the light on. Nami talks back, "It's ok if I'm just leaving my textbooks here but Mom told me to bring back the special sake cup." They are in the cellar, which was made during the war as an underground trench. Although they don't hear, there seems to be a creature down there.
Uruka and Nami come down to the basement. Uruka has to agree that "It *feels* pretty scary". Then Uruka finds something moving in the darkness. She thinks it might be souls of those who died here during the war, which sends Nami into panic. But it was just a joke of Uruka, trying to teasing her. Nami is angry and Uruka, who knows she cannot be here alone, declares, "All right then. Let's go separate ways. I'll go this way." Nami loses no time to follow her.
Uruka stops suddenly. She has heard something. Nami thinks she is teasing her again but this time she is serious. Then they see a small shadow flying across theirs. They run around in the complicated tunnel randomly in panic and eventually gets cornered into a small room. The shadow looms up to really scare them but it turns out to be a small puppy. Uruka wonders how the puppy [its name is Kyanwan] has got into the underground tunnel but Nami is enchanted with its cuteness. She lifts it up in her hands. Although she doesn't realise, its eyes are mechanical devices and "recognise" her as a special person. Then the room is lit up by numbers of luminous screens to show a big Buddha-like white statue at the center of the room. The statue lifts itself up into the air and starts chasing the girls.
They manage to come out of the the storehouse but Uruka, this time, trips over. Nami stops but, before she can move to help her friend, the statue comes above her as if going to crush her. But it stays up in the air and its bottom begin to illuminate to reveal a five-pointed star.
Nami finds herself surrounded by soft white light and then hear a man's voice [Dr Ayanokouji], "You, who succeed the factor of animist, please heed my plea. To keep the blood of animists alive and for the sake of the future, awaken my daughter up. The new steel angel, Kurumi Mark II." The white statue breaks down to reveal Kurumi inside. Kurumi is unconscious yet and, losing the support from the statue, slowly falls on Nami before the distracted girl can move.
Uruka comes to the scene and finds Kurumi kissing Nami. Uruka is horrified as she secretly wanted Nami's first kiss ^_^;; Anyway the kiss activates the angel heart and Kurumi finally wakes up. She stands up and cheerfully greets her new master, "Good Morning, Master!", to send the two girls into yet another panic.
