A small girl with red hair is crying in the rain. She has fallen to spread the content of her school bag on the road. Her brand-new textbooks and notebooks have been ruined. A boy is holding his umbrella over her. He tries to console her but, seeing her remain crying, starts picking up the books on the road. He tells her to exchange them with his; they haven't been used yet anyway and all she has to do is erase his name on them and put hers instead. She seems deeply touched by his act. She stops crying and meekly says, "Thank you, Hiroyuki-chan."
Akari wakes up in her girlish room. A good view of the brisk morning from the widow brings a smile on her face.
OPAkari leaves home for school and runs down the slope in front of her house to come to another house. She rings the bell but gets no answer. So Akari gives a shout to its intercom, "Get up, Hiroyuki-chan, or you'll be late for school." A window of the upstairs opens and a boy appears from it. "All right. So stop it now."
On their way to school, Hiroyuki complains her about her calling him, now a high school student, with "chan". Akari apologises but seems not taking it too serious. They come to the steps before which she fell years ago. She was going to tell him about her dream last night but Hiroyuki is more concerned of the hot weather, which is annoying him.
A teasing voice comes from behind, "Oh, you are not rushing this morning for a change." It's Masashi, who sympathises Akari for her effort of waking Hiroyuki up every morning. She agrees while Hiroyuki insists she is coming too early. He can run to school in time even without her [he proves this in the last episode], of which Akari isn't sure at all. Their friendly quarrel assures Masashi they are in their usual good mood for the first day of the second term.
Akari loves a new start, which brings a new world and new people with it. Yet there is one thing she wants keep unchanged forever. Ever since that rainy day in the dream, Fujita Hiroyuki has always been with her. However many new memories she might gain from now, she believes that Hiroyuki and she will live the same time together.
After the commencement ceremony, Hiroyuki complains about the boring speech by the Master. He wishes the summer holiday would continue until the weather becomes cool enough. An over-cheerful voice greets him. It's Remmy, an overseas student. Apparently a wide range of wonderful Japanese food during the holiday has made her even more energetic than usual. With her dubious Japanese, she tries to cheer Hiroyuki without much success. Masashi proposes to go to karaoke together after school. It may cheer Hiroyuki up. But he says he is too tire today.
In their classroom students cries out for dismay as their teacher has told them to change their seats for the new term. He ignores the voices and leaves Hoshina Tomoko, the class representative, to take the change. Akari wishes to sit next to Hiroyuki, who seems to show no interest whatsoever about where he sits.
Tomoko asks for opinions about the method to decides new seating but no one makes a serious proposal. Eventually she declares to go by a draw for fairness. Even though many students complain her unilateral decision, she goes ahead with her plan.
Masashi asks Hiroyuki which seat he would like. Hiroyuki, tired and hungry, doesn't care but, seeing Akari looking at him from her seat, adds, "the seat nearest to the back door." Masashi is sure it is one of the most popular ones. Then even more definitive replies comes from an unexpected person, "No, "popular" is understatement!!"
It's Shiho from the next class. She has been sitting on her heels by Hiroyuki and starts to preach the attraction of the back seat near the door. Hiroyuki wants to know why she, of the next class, is here. She calmly replies, as their home-room finished already, she is free to be anywhere she wished to. She even tells him to give his seat up for "the visitor". Akari is pleasantly appalled by Shiho's cheeky attitude.
Meanwhile a handful girls surround Tomoko, who is undisturbed and continues to prepare the paper strips for the draw. The girls are unhappy about Tomoko's one-sided decision and accuse her of not listening to the class..., without proposing any concrete alternative. Akari sympathises with Tomoko.
Eye CatcherShiho is rather dismayed at the slow progress of the matter. If things stay like this, they will be late for the special discount for the karaoke room. Hiroyuki is surprised to hear that he is included in "they" but soon realises who is to blame. Akari makes an apologetic gesture from her desk and Hiroyuki gives himself up.
The mood between Tomoko and the girls gets even tenser. Other students also begin to complain the slow process. Just when Akari wonders if she should help Tomoko, Hiroyuki stands up and approaches Tomoko without a word. Then he offers to help making the strips, which she accepts without showing much sign of gratitude. Akari looks at him with a proud smile on her face.
The draw is finally ready. Hiroyuki goes back to his seat and is met by Shiho, a little surprised. He explains to her that he only wants to get it done quickly. Shiho takes it as a display of his wish to hear her wonderful karaoke.
Tomoko tells the students to start the draw. Each student picks one of the folded paper strip, on which a number is written. It corresponds to their new seat randomly numbered and displayed on the blackboard. Hiroyuki draws "3" and is assigned to a seat next to his current one. Akari looks at the numbers on the blackboard. The seat "18" is next to his and hasn't been drawn yet. Her turn comes as she renews her determination. She hesitates before the strips and gets urged by Tomoko to do quickly. She slowly picks one and unfolds it. The number on it brings a happy smile, "I'm No.18!"
Now the home-room is over and Akari prepares to leave. Hiroyuki wants to know why she looks rather happy. She replies this is the first time she sits next to him and it has been her dream. He doesn't sound impressed or anything to hear so but gazes her. Then Shiho comes to the classroom door, this time with her school bag, ready to leave for the karaoke room. The four (or the three excluding Hiroyuki) have a good time there.
That evening Akari chats in her room with Shiho over the phone. To Akari's surprise, Shiho says she couldn't sing to her heart's content. She wanted to sing more but apparently Hiroyuki wanted to go home. Shiho speaks ill of him for a while but Akari's "I agree" is enough to calm her down.
Akari sits at her desk and writes her diary. Then she looks at a photograph; she and Hiroyuki in their childhood. She ends her diary for the happy day with, "May we will be together forever."
