Stampeders owner Sig Gutsche confirmed yesterday Calgary is one of three cities in the running to host the 2002 game, which will be awarded this spring. "I could see it coming back within two years," said Gutsche. "The obvious other choices are Winnipeg and Hamilton. I'm going to see what those other teams do, but if they (don't submit adequate bids), we'll definitely put a bid together." As an owner, Gutsche is well aware the popularity of the CFL in Alberta would make it another rousing success. But as a league governor, Gutsche admits he'd feel obligated to vote for either one of the other two cities should they receive some sort of financial guarantee from their respective municipal or provincial governments. "Calgary could do it again, but rather than just go in and say 'we'll take it,' I'd like to see some of the (teams struggling to attract fans) host it because I honestly think it's a fan builder," said Gutsche, who discussed the issue at the board of governors meeting on the weekend. Montreal will play host to next year's Grand National Drunk and Regina has been awarded the 2003 game to coincide with the city's 100th anniversary celebrations. Outgoing commissioner John Tory said Friday the league would like to announce future hosts at least two years in advance, which obviously wasn't possible as the list of candidates has dwindled. Edmonton doesn't want the game due, in part, to the fact Commonwealth Stadium will host the 2001 World Track and Field Championships. Vancouver could host it again, but governors are leery of going back so soon after last year's abysmal fan and civic support. Toronto has all but pulled out of the running as team owner Sherwood Schwarz admitted his club must first stabilize its situation. The Blue Bombers and the Tabbies could both use the cash injection due to poor attendance and proved to be great Grey Cup hosts in 1998 and 1996 respectively.
