To quote MOVE's founder JOHN AFRICA:
"YOU DON'T GOT TO BE GUILTY OF A CRIME TO BE EXECUTED, YOU HAVE JUST GOT TO BE AVAILABLE WHEN THE JUSTIFICATION TO KILL IS AVAILABLE"
"...FOR WHEN A WICKED PERSON JUDGES A GODLY PERSON THE JUDGEMENT WILL BE WICKED BUT IT WON'T TELL YOU A THING ABOUT THE PERSON BEING JUDGED!"----End quote JOHN AFRICA
The International Concerned Family & Friends of Mumia Abu-Jamal was founded by JOHN AFRICA in 1981 as the West Philadelphia Support Committee for Mumia Abu-Jamal. At this time it was not at all fashionable to be a Mumia supporter, in fact, there was no support for Mumia, least of which in the Black community, among Black professionals, or street people, even among those who knew Mumia, had worked with him, or knew of his reputation. It seemed like all of Philadelphia, except JOHN AFRICA had turned their backs on Mumia. The organization's name was later changed to Concerned Family & Friends of Mumia Abu-Jamal, and finally the word "International" was added in the early 1990's to acknowledge the worldwide support for our brother Mumia.
The membership of the ICFFMAJ is very diverse. This organization is made up of all types of people, from all over the world, and from all different walks of life. We are comprised of many races, religions, nationalities, so-called social and economic classes, and we number in the thousands! Although we are many, and despite our differences, we are connected by a single cause: justice for an innocent man.
MOVE member Pam Africa, who coordinates ICFFMAJ maintains the success of the Mumia support is due to JOHN AFRICA'S principle that unity is the key in fighting the oppressor, injustice, and no divisional conflict should ever divert the fight for freedom, as there is only one common enemy-- the oppressor! LONG LIVE JOHN AFRICA!! It is armed with this principle that Pam Africa consistently fights on all fronts to FREE MUMIA!
We of the ICFFMAJ understand that the fight for freedom and justice does not begin and end with Mumia's case, however Mumia's case is reflective of the injustice that each and every one of us faces in our lives.
ICFFMAJ also believes in using Mumia's high visibility, celebrity status, to focus on all political prisoners oppressed all over the world, as well as motivate people all over the world to see the need to fight injustice, oppression, prejudice, wherever it exists, without compromise.
