Harris clubs himself with golf grants Jeff Harder--- Canoe--Jan, 2001 Ontario Conservatives have lost the common sense that got them elected in 1995. It's hard to believe they would give $98,000 to a golf tournament in the Nipissing riding that belongs to Premier Mike Harris. To make it worse, the golf course that hosted this event is owned by the premier's longtime friend, Peter Minogue. Harris said his government would be different. He said it would squeeze inefficiency out of the system, and spend scarce tax dollars on priority areas like education and health care. But now, they're subsidizing elitist competitions that are held on private property for select VIPs. The image is indefensible. The next time these Tories pull out the public chequebook, I suggest they take a little walk down University Ave. in Toronto. I suggest they pop into the Princess Margaret Hospital and tell cancer patients why they have to go on waiting lists for surgery and related treatments. And when they're done with the adults, how about a visit to the Hospital for Sick Children, where they can explain the same thing to ailing school aged patients. |
