Immaculate Devil
Daniel Jeremy Perz

 Made a deal
with the immaculate devil
A deal so level
headed
anyone can understand it
A deal with the devil?
Be careful!
Your conscience says
not to settle for less
than the very best
Think of the rest
who suffered under him
But turn around
what have you found?
Can he be compassionate and fair
Not interested or ready to tear
your heart and soul from
your being. Drums thrum
in the distance
You feel the presence
There’s no backing out
The compulsion to shout
overwhelms your mind
and the breathing evident behind
You turn around
stare into his eyes
and listen to the sound
of Hell’s cries
“You’ll be going there soon”
He states matter-of-factly
“Not too early
you promised me.”
“I know. To you life may seem long
but to Satan it is but a ding-dong
on the grandfather clock of death.”
“I reckon labeling Hell as cryptic
would be a statement of respect
if not a understatement.”
“The description you give is correct
I’d like you to tell
all that I’d prefer you not call it ‘Hell’
A term which carries religious connotations
I’m sure you understand
this is not a religious land.”
You nod your acknowledgment
“All right. You ensured I wouldn’t die insane
Can you tell me the date
when I enter Satan’s domain?”
“I certainly can, but would you not prefer surprise?”
You can sense that Satan is not asking a question
“You assure me, a long life I’ll live.”
“To a ripe old age, my word I give.”
Satan flashes a devilish grin
and vanishes in a spite of sin
Left alone, you are
Again gone too far
You sigh, and live it out
and follow the route
that is your existence
Success through persistence
that’s what you achieve
it’s what you breathe
to feed your soul
of which you discern you’ll lose control
in not too long a time
Despite the Devil’s kind deal
It’s been fifty years
but you don’t feel
fifty years older
Fifty years in time
since that sublime
Encounter
of great wonder
Is it not time to collect
on that outstanding debt?
You can’t shake the thought
You can’t forget the deal you bought
into with almost childish
blindness
from the awe of Satan’s power
Boy, you think, you need(ed) a cold shower
Years later, amazement!
You’re still alive,
still in debt
but why?
Who cares! You gloat over this compliment
Gone unnoticed for a century
Before realizing an eternity
seeping with immortality
Many more years drift by
You never die
World War III
It proves the ultimate key
No one survives
You’re the only human left alive
You cry out your tears
Permeated with your greatest fears
But they don’t stop the years
From passing ever so slowly
Condemned to Hell on Earth
Alone, unappreciated, unholy
No life, no death, no birth
You’re going insane
He promised you wouldn’t die insane
The sun explodes in a supernova
Guess what? You’re still alive
Eternal insanity
No man can thrive
alone in space screaming obscenities
You call out to the devil
No response
You can’t fathom the time that passes
Time has no meaning
Then his voice envelopes your surroundings
“You made a deal with the devil
You got what you asked for
You’ll never die a madman.”
The agonizing dry tears in your eyes
No longer flow, in your most painful hour
“You tricked me.”
You complain, not expecting an answer
“You knew you’d go to Hell”
“I thought it was Satan’s domain”
“No, child, you’re in Hell.”
With that, Satan’s voice faded into nothingness
once again
And you live your eternity, lacking any bliss
In this place called Hell
Provided to you in full,
by the Immaculate Devil
