Misplaced
Daniel J. Perz

My love for you is misplaced
Your soul is displaced
You never could be replaced
in my mind, it’s always a race
never complace
My path to you shall be retraced
This love we share, not commonplace
I can see it in your face
What you feel for me is simply
failed by words to articulate
the sense that coexists on a date
love that’s better than first-rate
love that can survive any debate
love that flourishes in spite of fate
though, to be true, it’s misplaced
I can smell your taste
I can feel your soul pace
I know your thoughts’ base
Deeper than emotion imaginable
Higher than ecstasy incarnate
What once was unfathomable
Seems never to vacate
my mind, in joy we mate
in joy, I should hate
Should hate, but don’t,
Don’t ask, don’t
Against fate, against the bait
We succeeded, succeeded
We did, or did we?
How can I be certain?
I’m not certain, are you?
My knees collapse,
succumb to the too-heavy burden
Are we through?
I know you’re hurtin’
Don’t worry.
Don’t worry?
Explain it I would
If I had the eloquence
To quench
your desire
To know, I tire
Retreat into the fire
Of hell, all the same
You I can’t blame
—you’ve been so tame—
I, too lame.
If you came,
Called my name
I’d certainly follow
You down to sorrow
And ne’er see you ’morrow
The fates are too tricky,
In the late evening
And what is seeming
To be loving and good
’tis truly hateful and mourning?
I don’t know, if the bang will see a whimper
But I can’t deny my feelings
I can’t deny the fates either
What to do?
Do what, to you?
How can I live?
Perhaps I never will
