We All Die — So Why Care?
Daniel Jeremy Perz
We all die
A simple biological truth
Why grow attached to anyone? Why?
From the very beginning of youth
We are comforted by the thought of heaven
When our relatives die, and finally us, that’s where we’ll see them
If it’s true, it could never be proven
It could never be described adequately with this pen
So what’s the point of living?
Of growing attached?
When all the pain and suffering
Of all the people all over the world can’t
Bring a soul back to this terrestrial world
It’s the truth, we never could
The solution is simple
Never form a bond
With anyone
Not the cute guy with the dimple
Not your mother
Even if you feel it’s wrong
Not with your own son
Not with your grandfather
Treat them like you’d treat a fly
So many of them, you can’t tell which is which
You don’t miss one when it’s swatted
Why, when your cousin dies, waste your energy and become exhausted
When you can pretend nothing happened with a sigh
Though you’d probably get away with a twitch
Inside you’re beginning to feel like a bitch
Your dependence on emotion takes its toll on you
You can’t not give a damn any longer
Emotion is a part of who we are
Accept it can sometimes leave a mental scar
You must accept what’s true
They’re gone for good, there’s no bringing them back
Remember what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger
Try to come to terms with your lack
Of an ability to handle the situation
For you know, eventually you’ll be in the same position
