Visible symptomscalf06.jpg (26960 bytes)

  • Sucking of navel.
(Bald skin patches around the umbilicus; sac-like extension due to sucking).

Examination

  • Differentiation from umbilical abscess and umbilical hernia by manual examination of the navel.

  • Checking abdominal wall.

Diseases that may be involved

  • Navel-ill.

  • Umbilical abscess.

  • Umbilical hernia.

(24)

Visible symptomscalf07.jpg (25001 bytes)

  • Normal faeces.
(1st week of life: yellow to light brown colour, consistency pappy to greasy/fatty and viscous, without solid components).

Examinationcalf10.jpg (16508 bytes)

  • First faeces after birth: (greenish-black, viscous; formed by the calf before birth and usually excreted on the first day).

Diseases that may be involved

  • No diseases that's a normal case.

(25)

Visible symptomscalf08.jpg (25889 bytes)

  • Soft faeces on change-over to milk substitutes, colour yellow to grey.

  • Take-up of hay or straw; greasy/fatty, paste-like consistency, with solid components.

Examination

  • Checking the faeces.

  • Physical examination.

  • Take the temperature.

Diseases that may be involved

  • Scours of sucking calfs.

  • Nutrition-induced diarrhoea.

(26)

Visible symptomscalf09.jpg (22005 bytes)

Diseases that may be involved

  • Febrile conditions.

(27)

Visible symptomscalf11.jpg (24687 bytes)

  • Incipient diarrhoea in the first week of life.
