Dennis H. Bartow· Appearance: Human male, 65, 230 lbs, with a medium, muscular build. Medium red hair, kept regulation short, almost buzz cut, smooth-featured. Dennis is 35 years old and looks his age, neither older nor younger. His face is usually a pleasant serious expression, but his hazel eyes are usually examining everything around him. Dennis seems to know a lot of the subtext that happens around him and makes a habit of reading people from their body language, what they dont say, and how they fidget. ·
Position: Federation
Attorney and Chief Investigations Officer ·
Family: § James Bartow (Father, age 59) recently retired from civilian legal practice on Cylus Prime, a federation colony on the outskirts of federation territory, vaguely near the Cardassian border (although not enough to be directly embroiled in the Dominion War). Currently living on New Berlin, Luna. § Maria Henry-Bartow (Mother, deceased) Died two years before the start of the Dominion War on Cylus Prime, during a Maquis raid on an orbital station where she worked as a chemist. § Lt. Commander Douglas H. Bartow (Brother, age 39) Currently serving as 2nd tactical officer aboard the USS Sabertooth, a Centaur-class starship, currently the borders of Sona space. Dennis and Douglas have an affable relationship, with Dennis looking up to Douglas more often than not and measuring his own success by Douglas. § Lieutenant, J.G., Darren H. Bartow (Brother, age 31) Currently serving as security officer on Starbase-321, situation on the Klingon/Federation border. Darren should be farther along in his Starfleet career, however, he has been involved in questionable legal dealings with Klingon friends of his and, while nothing has stuck, his reputation is besmirched enough to stall his advancement in rank. Darren and Dennis also have an affable relationship, and Dennis attempts to be to Darren what Dennis thinks Douglas should be to himself, hence, he constantly expects Darren to look up to him and follow his advice, which doesnt often occur. ·
Interests/Talents: § Medieval European History: Dennis is a buff on medieval European history from Earth, and has researched historical accounts of military battles, knighthood, and the European political and religious climate. He often studies other cultures history to seek similarities and comparisons. §
Fencing, Sword
Fighting, Jousting: following his interest in medieval culture, Dennis enjoys
fencing, sparing with broadswords, and jousting and, through holodeck programs and
infrequent real-time encounters, he has grown quite adept at both. §
Legal Systems
of Federation Worlds: Dennis enjoys researching and cross-comparing the legal
systems of jurisprudence from the major federation races, and those outside the
federations boundaries. He became interested in them during his time on the USS Valorous
(see below) and has studied the vagaries and differences between them since. ·
Career/Education § Starfleet Academy: Dennis attended Starfleet Academy at the age of 19 years; he graduated with honors after four years. (Age 23 - Cadet) § Service Aboard USS Valorous (Intrepid Class Vessel): Served two years as an ensign in the tactical department, generally as a security officer. Distinguished himself in several investigations amid alien cultures, and assisted in the clearing of Starfleet personnel from accusations by alien governments and claimants. Recommended by Chief Tactical Officer Santek to the Satie Legal Academy. (Age 25 - Ensign) § Satie Legal Academy: Dennis attended the Legal Academy at the prompting from his former Chief on the Valorous and because he had an aptitude and interest for legal investigations and the Law. Attended and graduated with honors after 2 years (Age 27-Ensign). § Clerked for Judge Reginald Brann on Starbase-84: Dennis spent 2 years clerking for an esteemed judge on Starbase-84, outside of the Trill system, and, due to his exemplary work, was eventually promoted to Lieutenant JG for his work on keeping the schedule on track and clearing the caseloads. He became extremely friendly with Judge Brann and regarded him as a mentor. (Age 29 Lieutenant JG). § Served Aboard USS Empyrean (Nebula Class Vessel): Dennis spent the next three years serving as a tactical officer aboard a Nebula Class Vessel. While returning to active service on a starship was not what he had planned, the Dominion War interrupted everyones plans and Dennis was willing to do his duty without complaint. During this time, Dennis saw a lot of combat, as the Empyrean was a battle group leader. Dennis learned a lot about tactical systems and cross-fleet cooperation and coordination. He received a promotion for his efforts and his ability to coordinate massive amounts of resources calmly and efficiently. (Age 32 Lieutenant 1st Grade) §
Served Aboard
USS Diplomat (Ambassador Class Vessel): Dennis spent three years working as
a special assistant to Ambassador Frennick of Beta Zed aboard the USS Diplomat
whose primary mission was the negotiation of trade agreements, border disputes, and
diplomatic overtures for admission into the Federation by the Sheliak of Shelia IV. The
Sheliak are a non-humanoid race with a language that eludes the Federation translators and
telepaths and their agreements are extremely complex. Due to the uncooperative and
arrogant nature of the Sheliak as a race, the negotiations drug on for many, many months
and were not able to be carried out at a starbase. The Diplomat was thus, tied up
for a similar period, making frequent rendezvous with the Sheliak starships for
face-to-face negotiations. In the end, Ambassador Frennick, with Dennis help, was
able to knock out the requested agreements. Given the stress of the assignment, Ambassador
Frennick retired after the agreements were made and Dennis was reassigned to the Judicial
Corps of the Federation and given his current assignment. (Age 35 Lieutenant 1st
Grade). ·
Personality Dennis Bartow is an easy-going man, comfortable with himself, his skills, his mission. He is very honorable and believes in the power and integrity of the legal system and its ability to keep the peace and preserve civilization. He can be very high-minded about the integrity of the system and following the rules, and sometimes has problems adjudicating his responsibilities and his ethics when situations become gray. In generally, Dennis is organized to the point of being anal-retentive, but a fine tactical officer who thinks in both broad strokes and fine detail. Despite his job function that keeps him embroiled in technicalities, interpretations of finer points of law, and Starfleet regulations, Dennis can and does let go of all that when he decides to have a good time. |
