Dominion Wars
This game is full of bugs, and woefully short - however, it is a brilliant game.
Set during the last two seasons of Deep Space Nine, you can play through 10 single player missions as the Federation (commanding both Starfleet & Klingon ships).
Alternatively, you can be the Dominion - commanding both Cardassian & Jem'Hadar ships for another 10 missions.
A total of 20 single player missions exist - which makes for a very short war indeed.
You can select your own Captains to command your ships - although the better your Captain (e.g. Sisko), the more expensive they are to purchase.
The introductory movies look superb - but on my, fairly powerful computer, the graphics card struggles to synchronise the speech and video together. The voices are provided by only 3 people from the TV series - Admiral Ross, Weyoun & Dukat.
The so called "free inclusion" of Starship Creator, Warp2 was however, missing from the British edition.
Not top fear however, as the Publishers, SSI, lied to us, and you can't actually incorporate your own Captains or starships into the single player - you can only do this in the multiplier, which was something I felt very aggrieved at. (False advertising!).
Therefore you cannot play Picard, Janeway or Spock. - Likewise you can't include any other custom made ships.
Speaking of custom ships, on the official website, one particular ship interested me, which was a silhouette of an Intrepid (Voyager) class starship. This actually turned out to be a different class - Anchilles, which I didn't like.
I can't understand why they didn't insert people or vessels from other series - e.g. Picard from DS9's "Emissary", or an Intrepid Class starship from "Extreme Measures".
Another annoying thing is not being able to save "mid mission" - and some of the later missions take quite a long time to complete.
This game is severely bugged, but there are patches available from the official publisher's site.
I'm hoping that this beautiful looking game gets:
Here's ANOTHER REVIEW:
Space combat sim based on the popular TV series. The game will feature a series of single-player missions tied together with a strong story and there will also be a strong multi-player mode. Numerous types of ships from the series will feature and it will also be possible to import ships made using Star Trek Starship Creator Warp 2.
We've come a long way from Styrofoam boulders and felt insignia. Star Trek has captured the world's imagination like no television series previous or since, spawning a slew of spin off series, movies and crazed fans. But you already knew that. What you don't know is that Simon and Schuster is poised to bring the world Dominion Wars, a real-time Star Trek tactical space strategy game. The game is being developed by Gizmo Games and the project is headed up by Gary Wagner.
Dominion Wars is based on the Deep Space Nine franchise, and the story line follows from the show's last two seasons. The Federation and its Klingon allies must wage war on the Cardassians and Dominion for control of the Alpha Quadrant. DW allows you to play as any of four races: Federation, Klingon, Cardassian and Jem 'Hadar (whose name means "the people of the superfluous apostrophe").
Take the helm of up to six ships in over 30 missions spanning three campaigns. Manipulate more than 20 classes of starships, including the Defiant, Sovereign and Galaxy classes we all know and love. As an added treat, there have been several ship classes developed exclusively for this game.
Recruit your fleet and watch them grow, building ship captains through the use of a point system as you progress through single and multi-player battles. Determine the ships you'll need to fight the battles, and eventually win back the Alpha Quadrant. Dominion Wars is strapped with clever enemy AI and ultimate control over your own fleet.
In addition, DW boasts several multi-player modes compatible available for Internet and LAN play. Up to eight warriors will be able to throw down at once while attacking or defending a starbase. Great fun for anyone with a textured forehead.
