Starvingman formed in the first part of 1998, originally going under the name 'Stroke' in Brisbane, Australia when Keith Craig (drums) and Chris Scully (guitar/vocals) were looking for a new band after their previous group Antarctica was 'put on ice'. Chris then ran into a former high school mate, Steve Smith (guitar/vocals). Steve was looking at doing something new himself after working and releasing material as a solo artist among other things. Then entered original bass player and song-writing contributor Graham Prouse, a long time friend of Chris'.

After only a few rehearsals came what were their first five songs. These songs were recorded in August '98 at three locations using Steve's makeshift studio. The end product was Stroke's debut EP 'Father's Milk' released in November through Steve's own DTA label. The five songs were 'Adorer', 'You Don't Have To Love Me', 'Promise', 'Inside Your Head', and 'Without A Trace'. After playing a handful of gigs between December and March, the band started to record some new material from their ever-growing repertoire. The new material also shows more diversity, which is natural for most bands.

The introduction of Shane Kroll on bass guitar came soon after. Since going through a few temporary replacements dating back to Prouse's departure, Shane has instilled himself as a permanent fixture and has eventually started to lend his hand at song-writing. The 'Fast' CD was then released in March 2000. It was the band's first full-length release and featured tunes from the riffy rock of 'We Is' to the acoustic sing-a-long of 'Six Degrees'. The metallic 'I Am The Man' to the atmospheric and moody 'Daggers', not to mention the indie-rock of 'Amnesia' to the sway of 'Corporate Girl'. July 2000 saw the temporary departure of Scully. Starvingman continued as a three piece until he eventually returned in February 2001.

Later came the release of the 'Hotel Mariana' EP, inspired by a Roman hotel of the same name that Steve and Scully stayed at while in Italy in 1999. The tracks were 'Radio Friendly', 'Angry Man', 'Cell Maker', 'Corporate Girl 2000', and 'Magnetic' Soon after, Starvingman shot their first music video for the Fast CD version of 'Without A Trace'.

A live album entitled Starvingleg was released finally in 2003. These recordings were taken from various shows during the Hotel Mariana tour of June-July of 2001. The band had never really had a chance to listen back to the rough tapes of the gigs, so in late 2002 - early 2003, Steve unearthed the recordings and compiled the live compilation.

During 2003, the band has been active with some live shows as well as writing and recording. There are tentative plans for the re-release of Starvingman's full back catalogue along with bonus promotional videos. There is also plans for a live DVD/documentary of the band in action in the studio and live.

February 2004 should see the release of the Utah 2 EP as well as a heavy gigging schedule.
