This October, National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, members of Zeta Tau Alpha Fraternity for Women will distribute over 300,000 pink ribbons to help raise awareness about breast cancer as part of their THINK-PINK!™ campaign.
One in eight women will contract breast cancer during her lifetime. Breast cancer is the leading form of cancer among American women and, for women ages 35-54, is the leading cause of death. However, when breast cancer is confined to the breast, the 5-year survival rate is over 95%. Thus, early detection is the key to survival.
One of the most exciting aspects of the ThinkPink! campaign is the work with several NFL teams. It started in 1999 with the Washington Redskins. Since then it has expanded, with the support of the NFL General Office. In 2002 this campaign reached Pittsburgh and continued in 2003, with an exciting evening game. The Steelers are wonderful hosts, providing the volunteers with end-zone seats. It's a few hours of service well spent!
Each April, members participate in ZTA's Don't be a Fool - Do Monthly Breast Self Examinations™ campaign, distributing thousands of shower cards showing how to conduct a proper breast self exam. The cards are printed in English on one side and Spanish on the other and include step by step illustrations. Recently, ZTA added the "One In Eight" calendar reminder sticker distribution to this program. This piece contains 12 pink ribbon stickers - one for each month - to place in a calendar as a reminder to do a monthly breast self exam. Additionally, stickers for annual clinical exams and mammograms are also included. To date, members have distributed over 8 million cards and stickers.
In addition to our own breast cancer awareness programs, ZTA has been a strong supporter of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation since 1992. As a national sponsor of the Survivor Recognition Program for Komen's Race for the Cure® events, ZTA provides pink t-shirts, buttons and hats for breast cancer survivors, as well as informational postcards and back signs for all participants to wear "in memory of" or "in celebration of" a loved one. In 1997, Kellogg joined the program with ZTA.
This October and every month, Zeta Tau Alpha reminds everyone to THINK-PINK!™.
