DCCM(SW) Edwin J. Byrnes III, USN
I come from a long line of Sailors. My great-grandfather was a Seaman, 1st Class during WWI; My grandfather retired as a Commander, and served during WWII; My father and his brother were petty officers, and both served during the Vietnam War.
In civilian life, I am the Chief of the Department of Veterans Affairs, Hudson Valley Regional Fire Department in New York.
I started my naval career in November of 1987, when I enlisted in the Delayed Entry Program.
In June of 1988, I entered active duty. First stop, NRTC San Diego, in company 134, for boot camp. Next stop, NTTC Treasure Island in San Francisco Bay, for Damage Control "A" School. Finally, reported aboard USS Savannah (AOR-4) on my 18th birthday, in November of 1988.
While onboard I advanced to DC3 in 1989, DC2 in 1990, and frocked to DC1 in 1993 before leaving.

I left active duty, in June of 1993, and entered the Navy Reserve.
First stop- NR Naval Weapons Station Earle, detachment 1302 at Naval Reserve Center, Fort Schuyler - located the the beautiful Bronx.

In November of 1996, I transferred to NR Afloat Training Group Mayport, detachment 102, located at Naval & Marine Corps Reserve Center Floyd Bennett Field - in Brooklyn, NY. I served as the Lead Instructor of the Shipboard Damage Control Team Trainer.
In July of 1999, N&MCRC Floyd Bennett Field was closed, and ATG Mayport, Det 102 was moved to N&MCRC Amityville, Long Island; also I was selected to Chief Damage Controlman! The last CPO out of Brooklyn, NY!! I served as the Training and Administration Division LCPO, until February of 2001.
I transferred to NR Naval Support Activity-Naples, Security Detachment C; where I served as the Command Chief from February 2001- December 2002.
On 02 October 2001, I was recalled to active duty in support of Operation Noble Eagle. Assigned to the Disaster Preparedness Division at NAVSUPPACT Naples, Italy, as Leading Chief Petty Officer, until my release on September 5, 2002.
In December 2002, I transferred back to the Bronx, to NR Naval Suport Activity Norfolk, Detachment B, as the Command Chief, and was advanced to DCCS in May of 2003. In January of 2004, I transferred to NR USS Doyle (FFG-39) Aug C, as the Command Senior Chief. On October 1, 2005, I became a plankowner of NR Center for Naval Leadership, Northeast Region, facilitating Leadership courses throughout the Northeast Region.
In 2006, I graduated from the Senior Enlisted Academy (NRC-11), and was selected to be on the staff at the Academy in January of 2007.
On April 9, 2007, I was frocked to Master Chief Damage Controlman!

On 19 November 2007, I reported back to active duty for a third time! Recalled this time for Operation Enduring Freedom. I served as the Senior Enlisted Advisor and Mentor to the Afghan National Army Senior Command and Staff Course and the Fire Chief at Camp Phoenix, both in Kabul.
Upon my transfer back to Reserve Duty, I will remain on the Faculty at the Senior Enlisted Academy, as well as serve as the SelRes Command Master Chief at Naval Operational Support Center, Bronx, NY.
While I was aboard the SAVANNAH I did the following cruises:
North Star '89 to the North Atlantic Ocean, where I earned my Blue Nose (the reindeer milk was just superb) -- Med Cruise '90-91, was going great until.....Operation Sharp Edge, for the liberation of Liberia, Africa, then Operation Desert Shield, serving as a supply shuttle from Rota, Spain to the Persian Gulf -- Med Cruise (???) '92, spent the entire time in the gulf !!, what great liberty !! (not) -- and of course the normal Law Enforcement Operations in the Caribbean Sea, about 4 times.
While onboard SAVANNAH, I visited the following places:
Portsmouth, England -- London, England -- Roosevelt Roads, Puerto Rico -- San Juan, Puerto Rico -- Marsielle, France -- Sigonella, Sicily -- Augusta Bay, Sicily -- Alghero, Sardinia -- Rota, Spain -- Barcelona, Spain -- Cartagena, Spain -- Hania, Crete -- Souda Bay, Crete -- Dubai, UAE -- Jebel Ali, UAE -- Djibouti, Africa -- Belgrade, Yugoslavia -- and of course -- Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
