It’s official! On August 30, 2000, Jeff and I joined our lives together forever. Our wedding took place in Borthwick Castle, a small 15th century fortress near Edinburgh, Scotland, just laden with history and ambiance. Our honeymoon was also spent in Scotland, our newly adopted homeland. Now it all seems like a dream. The weather was great the whole time,  and Jeff took pretty easily to driving on the left, even with the roundabouts and all of the sheep.

We really really loved the beautiful medieval city of Edinburgh. The street plan there is like a three-dimensional maze with all of its narrow, cobbled, dead-end streets heading every which way.  We spent almost a week in London, too, and saw all of the important sights, but by then we were born again Scotsmen and everytime we saw something Scottish, like the tomb of Mary Queen of Scots in Westminster Abbey, we'd feel our hearts swell with a wee bit o' Scottish pride.

Our wedding itself was even more like a dream. Our wedding coordinator Irene had everything so well in hand, we pretty much just had to show up. Two hours before the wedding we were sitting in our bedchamber in the castle having a light lunch of finger sandwiches and a cheese plate, and watching the sheep run across the verdant, sun-dappled hillside. It was incredibly relaxing.

An hour later, Irene arrived with her crew to help us get ready and Jeff and I parted company. The acoustics of the castle were such that I could hear the harpist playing upstairs in the garrison while I was being dressed. Everyone kept asking me if I was nervous - I wasn’t nervous at all! This was so relaxed and stress-free! I couldn’t imagine what I would have to be nervous about. The piper came and introduced himself to me and told me that he would make his way upstairs, and start piping, at which point I would make my entrance. Sounds pretty easy...

The minute the piper started playing, I started welling up with emotions. I gathered up all the strength I had to make my way up the winding flight of stairs to the garrison to make my entrance - the pipes just echoed off the masonry walls in a way that I will never forget. By the time I got up to see Jeff we were both crying, and I was trying to catch my breath in the highly impractical corset I was wearing. The ceremony was beautiful, the day was beautiful, and all over far too soon. Thank goodness we had it videotaped - as soon as we got home we watched it, otherwise my memories are just of feelings. . .  I can hardly remember the details.

I can’t really put into words how beautiful it all was, I invite you to take a look at our pictures and see for yourself.
