Railroad Preservation Links

These are links to other sites which I have found to be interesting or useful.

Check out the site of theThe East Broad Top Railroad. It is one of the best preserved narrow gauge railroads in the United States..

Another railroad to visit is theThe Nevada Northern Railway in Ely, Nevada. This is a somewhat out of the way steam railroad, but its relative isolation had meant that it has been preserved as it was when it was shut down.

For an online database of all known surviving steam engines in North America, go to:Steam List.

A list of all railroad radio frequencies can be found at:Railroad Frequencies.

The Railway Technical Web Pages has several very good glossaries of railroad terminology, including an excellent glossary of steam locomotive terminology(many of the terms are based on UK practice and design):Railway Technical Web Pages

A great site about the current status of steam locomotives around the world, including modern steam locomotive developments is International Working Steam Locomotives 2000.

Another list of Tourist Railways & Railway Museums can be found at:Railways and Museums

Here's the homepage of the Chicago and North Western Historical Society:C&NW

You can find actual sounds of Norfolk and Western Steam Engine 611 at:Teague's Retroweb

Railroads issued books which contained Diagrams of each class of engines operated by the railroad. The Diagram Books also usually contained a roster of the engine numbers of each class. An example of these diagrams for the Santa Fe Railroad can be found at:Santa Fe Locomotive Drawings

Railroad Extra is a site that has a lot of reproductions of old articles and advertisements, along with an online version of the classic book, "Locomotive Engine Running and Management", by Angus Sinclair:Railroad Extra.

Here is a shareware program which will teach you about the working of valve gear. His program can be downloaded at:Valve Gear Modelling Software

A Steam Locomotive Simulator program can be found at: Steam Locomotive Simulator Software.

A homepage devoted to railroad signalling and rules can be found at:Railroad Rules, Signalling, Operations

You can learn about some of the factors that were used to design a steam locomotive at:Steam Locomotive Designer.

One of the most unusal steam locomotives was the Beyer Garratt, designed by Garrett and buillt by Beyer, Peacock and Co. It wasn't used in the United States, but was a British design used in many countries, especially in southern Africa. Here are two links about Beyer Garratt locomotives:

Steam locomotives in the United States were arranged according to their wheel arrangement under a system called Whyte's System of Classification. You can find about it at: Wheel Arrangements of North American Steam Locomotives.

The following page contains a technical explanation of track dynamics and its affect on tractive effort: Railroading 101.

Steam Locomotives are still used in a few places. Here's a link that has photos of Garrett steam locomotives in operation in Zimbabwe. Zimbabwe Steam

The Soo Line Railroad ran through my hometown. Here's an amatuer link of Soo Line Photos and Links: Soo Line Links.
