canoe Boating on the estuary

A young chico paddles his dug-out canoe through the muddy waters of the Rio Lempa , photo left , while José, our French 'watsan' - water and sanitation - engineer hitches a ride, right , with La Colorada fisherman Don Julio.
The fisherman here use wooden whaler boats sealed with epoxy resin and powered by the ubiquitous Yamaha 40hp outboard.
Narrow boats like Julio's can exit the estuary and punch their way through the big swells on the river mouth bar and out into the open Pacific. They longline for shark and boca colorada - 'pink mouth', a large snapper. The kids in their dugouts set crab pots in the estuary.
