Frequently Asked Questions

What happens in an acupuncture treatment?

The first part of a treatment is obtaining a detailed history and descrition of the presententing problem. You will be asked specific questions - the answers to which will be used in developing the treatment plan specific to you and your needs. Once the acupuncturist obtains the necessary information about your condition, your treatment will begin. Depending on the treatment plan, you may be asked to change into a gown so specific parts of your body can be accessed easily and clothing will not interfere with placement of the needles.

Is acupuncture safe?

"One of the advantages of acupuncture is that the incidence of adverse effects is substantially lower that that of many drugs or accepted medical procedures used for the same conditions."
- 1997 NIH Consensus Statement

Acunpuncture is a very safe medical procedure when administered by a qualified practitioner. Pre-sterilized, disposable needles are used and strict adherance to standards created by the National Commission for the Certification of Acupuncturists and Oriental Medicine.

Is acupuncture painful?

Acupuncture needles are very fine and flexible - about the diameter or human hair. When the needles are inserted, the patient may experience a sensation of tingling or warmth. In most cases, insertion by a skillful practitioner is performed without discomfort. Many people are surprised to find that treatments are actually quite relaxing.

How long does a treatment take?

A typical treatment takes 30-45 minutes. After the needles are placed, you will lie relaxed and focused while the needles stimulate blood flow, energy and healing.

Is acupuncture covered by insurance?

This will depend on your insurance. I do not accept insurance company reimbursement. Payment is expected at the time of treatment and you will be given a receipt to submit to your insurance company.
