Response to the KAK Worm virus One computer affected. This email is sent from a safe machine. Virus now eradicated and safety measures double-checked 24-7Freecall would like to apologise to any Internet user who may have been affected by the KAK Worm virus that was unwittingly sent to some users. Sadly, it was sent to us by a subscriber, also unwittingly. Only one computer was affected by the virus. Unfortunately this computer was used to send replies to a number of people. We would advise that if anyone received any email from us yesterday (18th July) they should delete it without opening it. We have now eradicated the KAK Worm virus from our computer and have undertaken a thorough inspection of the whole system to ensure that it is not present anywhere else. Although our systems are protected by anti-virus software it is prudent that we recheck all of the hardware. The system has now been given the all clear. As an extra precaution we will not be sending out any emails for the next 24 hours. Any user unsure of what to do should call our Technical Support on 0870 0777247 or visit these sites for step by step instructions on how to delete any potential virus and to download anti-virus software:www.villagenet.co.uk/merlinscave/kak.html www.pchell.com antivirus.com/pc-cillin/ In closing we would like to thank ISP Review and Net4Nowt for bringing this to our notice quickly so that we could act immediately. Once again please accept our apologies for any inconvenience that may have been caused.

running out of disk space yet? Open 'my computor' and where the title appears at the top is a black triangle to the right. click on this and a roll down menu appears, but look carefully and you'l see that it can be scrolled up a little further to reveal the desktop icon. click on this and all your desktop icons appear. click on recycle bin once to select it only, then go to file/properties, this reveals a handle that can be pushed left or right. This can be used to configure the amount of space for the recycle bin to hold. To save space this can be pulled back to be a small amount of space, and all ow you to gain disc space!!

Change the amount of space used on your screen by selecting various settings in Start/Settings/Control Panel/Display/Settings/ Screen Area.

Dont worry your PC wont crash!

INFO

What are required are transparencies of 35mm. or bigger, 100 ASA or lower. Pictures should show sharp detail , so a good focusing lens is required. Be prepared to supply 100 transparencies or more for a good chance to get any thing accepted. Each slide should be titled and have your name on it. Please realise that I cannot be responcable for for any dealings made between yourself and the names of those, whose addresses I supply. As far as I know these people are running legitamite businesses.

First of all you can send what is known as a covering letter, which briefly out lines the type and quantity of photo's/slides that you have available(including Black and White pictures),Photocopy this and send these to the addresses as a first enquiry. This will help you in establishing which companies really want your work, and allow them to prepare to accept your work. They will probably send you guidelines as to what they would like to see. Promote what you have to offer rather than make an enquiry as to what the company would like to see. They will want to have the confidence in knowing that you have the photo's you list ready available, more than repeating to another enquiry about their business requirements. If you have what they want they will respond to you.

Freeware. If there’s one thing that we all want, or at least don’t seem able to resist, is something that’s free, and yes there’s always that nagging at the back of our minds that if its free then what’s wrong with it, or where’s the catch?. At the moment, it seems that there’s a glut of ISP’s not only offering free access to the net, but free software to boot. You’ll read that the software is compatible with Win 3.1 95 98 NT etc, but beware that if its originally produced pre 95, then it definitely wasn’t meant to run on Win95 or later, and that some files in Windows may be overwritten to enable it to run, but will your other programs run O.K. there after? Too often you’ll wonder why your program wont run, or the error messages keep popping up. If your on the net, sometimes you can make a search for missing files, and save your self from those error messages, but better still, just keep an eye on the age of the software and the system you’re running! Freeware sites offer a lot of software, but sadly there is very little that you probably need there. If you already have a word processing package then what need do you have of a program that replaces MS Notebook? That does not mean that there is nothing of worth out there, just that you have to trawl through a lot of rubbish to find any thing of use, and you cannot really tell until you’ve downloaded it. There are sites that frequently come up, when you do a search for freeware sites, and quite often it can be worth while taking a look at sites of bigger names such as ULEAD, who some times offer small packages for nowt. It all depends on what you want and it is worth while having something specific in mind before you search, as a mindless search on freeware will see you downloading all sorts of packages and when you get your telephone bill you’ll wonder why you ever bothered. Here are some sites that I’ve found useful,

http://www.winzip.comYes its classed as Shareware, but it doesn’t time out, so it might as well be FREEWARE for all we are concerned, and you’d be pretty stuck without it, if you’re downloading from the net. Most of the files you are going to download will need you to have this program on your system. What you download is an Exe file or self executing file. You just click on the icon and the program will install itself. Once its on your other downloaded programs can be opened as when you click on a zip file, winzip kicks in and takes over, you then just select 'Extract' to open the file up (and select the setup.exe fileof the downloaded program in most cases.)

http://www.napster.com/ With this software you can search other peoples computors for music files (even classical!) and down load them onto your computor. You can play the file from the software as well!

http://www.copernic.com searches the web.

http://www.ozemail.com.au/~scef/A great font manager that lets you delete your fonts if you have too many. Some programs wont run if you have too many!!

http://www.i-tex.de/ Maker of texture generating progs, great for web page backgrounds.

http://www.forteinc.com/ Newsreader.

http://www.basepath.com/Albumatic/ Similar to thumbs plus. You have to register, but at the moment it’s still free. http://www.ferretsoft.com/netferret/index.html Search engines.

http://www.abes.org/ search for pics and mp3.

http://softwaresolutions.net/freewareplus/ search for pics.

http://www.imesh.com/ log onto other peoples computers and share their files while they share yours!!

http://www.overware.com/free.htm utilities. http://www.astrolog.org/astrolog/astfile.htm Astrology for free.

http://www.lh.umu.se/~cobian Interesting biorhythm prog.

http://www.monumental.com/rshorne/ audio and 3d software.

http://www.muffled.dk/ Does a nice java applet synthesizer to put on your web page!!

http://www.asahi-net.or.jp/~HB9T-KTD/music/muse.html nice music generating prog, creates midi files.

http://homepages.tu-darmstadt.de/~variou/ring.htm This is the home page of the freeware programmers web ring. So, in theory, you should find links to all the latest available. http://www.ulead.com/download/download.htm A few freeware items here.

http://www.megalux.hu/upaint/ A nice paint prog. http://stud1.tuwien.ac.at/~e9227474/english.htm Another excellent paint prog.

http://www.kidsdomain.com/kids.html There are excellent progs here to keep the young ones happy.

http://www.max.co.yu/htmlbeauty/ html editor.

http://www.contactplus.com/index.htm they do task plus, a freeware pim.

http://www.lonewolf.gr/software/index.html Another calendar, still good though.

DaysEase Another calendar, but this one lets you add your own pictures and fonts!!! And you can print it out!!!

WOCAR This is the first free OCR(Optical Character Recognition) software I'v ever come across!!

anti-vir ANTI-VIRUS software. This is new to me. I'v always been a bit unsure of Anti-virus software and never really bothered with it, until I got the kak virus! I didnt want to fork out for a commercial product, or end up paying for upgrades to cover for the latest bug. I found this and gave it a go. On installing nothing seemed to happen, until the third attempt when the install process kicked in.I think that the program was checking my system before installing itself, but just didnt tell me about what it was doing!.I ran the program and it found the TSADBOT.EXE virus that came with 'real player', after deleting it a box came up saying that TSADBOT.EXE was missing, and that it was needed for programs to run(?!),mild panic set in, but I was relieved that after rebooting, my programs are running fine! There are no crashes in starting up!

homeplanet I found that this site offers a free satalite tracking utility showing the earth from space, with lots of real time info on moon phases etc.

Ergane Free translating software. It wont translate whole documents, but single words only. You have to download files for the native language and the language to be translated to

nomodo An interesting program that tells you whether your chosen domain name is taken or not, and offers alternatives if it is taken.

sunclock A interesting screensaver/clock that shows a map of the world with times of the variouse capitals in all the countries.

Stay Online An interesting Program that stops your ISP from disconnecting. You may be experiencing this especially during peak times when many people are taking up the cheap options of free connections during evenings and weekends, spoiling the enjoyment of the net for the rest of us. This program will help keep you connected!!

PRYME is a webcam uploader that works well, but fails to produce an html page that updates the webcam image as it is uploaded. To do this a free java applet from ANFY is needed called AnfyCam that produces the code so that you can add this to your site manually.
