I began to play brass instruments at eight years of age when I joined the 6th Hove Scouts Marching Band. At first I played a trumpet, and marched for my first season with the band before switching to the euphonium for my second season. At this time the 6th Hove Scouts were competing at national level in both the British Youth Bands Association and the Drum Corps United Kingdom championships.

I later went on to study the trumpet under Peter Chivers and Glenn Brailsford, and at the age of sixteen became the lead trumpeter in the Brighton and Hove Big Band. At this time I also played solo cornet with the Hangleton Band and played Eb soprano cornet in the Hangleton Youth Band, based in Hove, near Brighton.
