3. Tourist in NorthlandI went North cos stupidly I expected it to be warmer, it still rained. Whangarei wasn't so interesting. What was interesting was that 80% used the Maori pronounciation of the name; seems NZ is now much more Maori respecting.
| Went onto the bay of islands, saw the governor's house at Waitangi where the peace treaty between The British and Maoris was signed. At Kerikeri I saw another Maori fortress and the first stone building in NZ from 1830 .. Not very old really ! I was offered fruit farm work at £2 an hour , pathetic eh ? Hitched up to Kataia with some nice Maori women, who stopped to cut flax for weaving on the way. If you take something from the earth Maoris believe you should offer a prayer to the earth god first. |
