Elizabeth Allen Lousley

Mary Ann Lousley’s sister, Elizabeth Allen (1812-1901), married Edwin Caudwell in 1838.  We first meet her in the depths of depression because her oldest child, Job, has become very poorly indeed.  This seems a euphemism for fatally ill because nobody expects him to recover.  She herself then falls ill with suspected consumption.  As a cure for this, she and her husband take annual trips to Margate, sometimes as much as six months at a time.  Edwin was a draper who kept his business at Wallingford.  He suffered along with the others when Mr Webb went bankrupt.  Other branches of the Caudwell family lived at West Ilsley (Francis) and Drayton (Charles).  Francis Caudwell married Ann Humfrey, sister of Edward Humfrey, mentioned above.  We also see other signs of intermarriage, because Celia Humfrey, the daughter of Mary Ann Humfrey and Edward Humfrey will marry her cousin Frederick John Caudwell, son of Elizabeth Lousley and Edwin Caudwell.
