290 McDermot
Here we have three great artists collectives in one building, Ace Art and Urban Shaman on the second floor. Both galleries sell membership for a moderate annual cost. I earned free membership for both galleries on June 16, 05 by being one of the entertainers in their annual "Spoken Word" event.
The third floor houses the Outworks Gallery, a cooperative of artists. One of our former members, Clyde Finlay, is one of the members. They have annual fundraisers in September to which I have donated paintings.
The three galleries often cooperate, planning many of their events for the same evening.
Mayberry Gallery
Mayberry Gallery is also located on McDermot, just west of Main Street. They gutted one of Winnipeg's most beautiful heritage buildings to created an airy bright setting for Canadian art, especially Manitoba art.
My favorite living Canadian artist is Robert Genn from British Columbia. He is featured prominently at the gallery. He is one of the few artists who, like me, does silkscreened landscapes.
Robert Genn operates a website for artists called Painters Keys where artists can interact with each other. Roberts daughter Sarah's art can also be found on the site. She was one of the jurors for the 2005 MSA show. Several of our club members have signed up for Robert's twice weekly informative and challenging newsletter for practicing artists.
Mennonite Heritage Centre Gallery
The most beautiful modern building for a gallery is located on the highest spot of the Mennonite University on the SW corner of Grant & Shaftesbury. Two of the club members, Peter von Kampen and Traute Klein have been displaying their Christian art there in their annual juried show. It always runs over Christmas. Peter also had a one-man show there in 2005.
