ST. JAMES, La – If I only had one word describe this Thursday evening scrimmage, it would be “clean.”   The St. James Wildcats outscored H.L. Bourgeois Braves by seven scores to two.  Five of the seven Wildcat scores were from #22 Luther Ambrose who mustered up 140 yards of offense in ONLY two back-to-back plays from scrimmage.

Wildcat coaches got a lot more than they were expecting out of a nearly re-built entire offensive line.  Through discipline, this offensive line played good enough to get the ball carriers to the open field.

In the actual scrimmage, H.L. Bourgeois scored first on a 15-yard pass play.  From there on, St. James dominated the night.

Shortly after the Braves scored, Wildcat #14 Terry Isom scooped up a fumble and sprinted 50 yards for a score.

The Wildcat first-string offense took the field for its set number of plays and looked very sound and solid in moving the football.  Wildcat #5 Gary Davis zigzagged his way into the end zone on a nice run around the right corner.

Starting each new drive from their 30-yard line, St. James struck again and fast when #22 Luther Ambrose broke a tackle and sprinted up-the-middle for a 70-yard scoring run.

The very next play – Ambrose took a pitch to the outside and sprinted 70 yards for back-to-back scoring runs totaling 140 yards in only those two plays.

St. James took the ball first in the 12-minute simulated quarter and it was none other than Luther Ambrose scoring on a 1-yard dive.

H.L. Bourgeois was unable to score in the 12-minute quarter.

St. James scored twice in the goal-line drill and guess who?  Luther Ambrose provided the two scores on a 10-yard run and a 1-yard run.

H.L. Bourgeois was able to score on a nice run by #40 of the Braves in the goal-line drill.

While Luther Ambrose provided all the “fireworks” tonight, much credit must really be given to the entire team who, I thought, played very clean and discipline football.  It was this same style of football that provided many years of Wildcat success in the 1990’s.  Many younger players have already stood up and should become impact players in the fall.

In his post-game speech to the team, Coach Gaille pointed out how impressed he was with how solid the team tempo was.  Along with Coach Gaille, other coaches continuously pointed out how the players seemed to give it 120% tonight and even surprised some of them with their efforts.

The Wildcats will return in August in preparation for the 2006 season.
