ST. JAMES, La –The 2006 St. James Wildcats got their first taste of what another football team has to offer when they hosted the Helen Cox Cougars in a Thursday evening scrimmage at Wildcat Stadium.
If you kept score, St. James scored four touchdowns overall while Helen Cox scored one. The Wildcats’ first string provided three scores while the second unit provided one. Helen Cox received their sole score from their third string.
Wildcat Junior, Gary Davis, provided most of the night’s fireworks while teammate Luther Ambrose put on another one of his typical outstanding performances. Ambrose scored two touchdowns.
The scrimmage opened up with the third stringers starting from their opponent’s 30-yard line. Helen Cox made their only score of the night when the quarterback called his own number and scored up the middle. The next drive, the Wildcat third string defense was able to come up with an interception.
The big dogs then took the field when Helen Cox’s first team opened up on offense from their own 30-yard line. The cougars were unable to get anything going and their second team didn’t find much success as well as the Wildcat defense played very well.
The St. James first offense then took the field and it only took 4 plays before #22 Luther Ambrose scored on a 28-yard sweep to the right corner of the end zone.
On the very next drive, Ambrose would score again and yet again it was a 28-yard run. This time, however, Ambrose scoring run was up the middle.
Another spark on offense for the Wildcats came when Sophomore quarterback Marcus Dumas hit Craig Duronslet for a 59-yard pass. The Wildcats would find the end zone again when Kenny Zenon took in a 1-yard run.
The two teams then engaged in a 12-minute timed “quarter.” The Wildcats won the quarter game by a score of 7-0. The score came when #10 Juarelle Narcisse powered his way in on a 4-yard run with 5:19 left to play.
From there, the Wildcat defense gave in a little but still managed to keep Helen Cox from any possible deep scoring threat. Senior defensive back, Jared Byers, came up with an interception.
Whenever #5 Gary Davis, and #22 Luther Ambrose are in the backfield this season at the same time, you may want to hold on to your seat because it’s very possible that the next play could be a touchdown.
Helen Cox (Class-4A) is a newer school that formed due to the result of combined schools. Last year was the first football season for the Cougars and this year will mark the school’s first senior class. Hurricane Katrina shortened the Cougars’ first season to only six games.
St. James will return to action next Thursday evening for their final prep-test before the regular season begins. The Wildcats will participate in their annual Jamboree battle with the always-strong Hahnville Tigers (Class-5A). The Jamboree is schedule to take place at Hahnville High School next Thursday evening, August 24, 2006.
