CHALMETTE, La – The St. James Wildcats extended their undefeated record to 4-0 as they defeated the Chalmette Owls 34-7 in this rare 4:00pm game – the first football game played in Chalmette since Hurricane Katrina.
In his post-game speech, Coach Gaille made sure his Wildcat team knew that the game was closer than the score suggested and said that everyone was capable of playing a lot better and that they were going to have to play at their best from here on out because it will only get tougher.
St. James received the opening kickoff and looked very solid on the first drive. Wildcat #10 Jaurelle Narcisse capped off the opening drive by “plowing” and “hurdling” his way to a 19-yard scoring run. Shortly after, Narcisse booted a successful extra point and the Wildcats took a 7-0 lead with 9:12 left in the first quarter.
The Wildcat defense didn’t get as good a start as they would have liked, however, similar to previous weeks, this modern day “Legion of Doom” defense made sure the “bending” didn’t lead to any “breaking.”
Late in the second quarter, Jaurelle Narcisse provided some “déjà vu.” Narcisse would scored his second touchdown of the night after yet again “plowing” and “hurdling” his way to, yet again, a 19-yard scoring run. Narcisse then, yet again, booted a successful extra point. That gave the Wildcats a 14-0 lead with 4:13 left in the first half.
The Wildcat’s next score came as a result of an 8-yard pass play from #2 Antonio Phillips to #1 Kenny Zenon. The extra point was blocked and with 8:25 left in the third quarter, St. James led 20-0.
Wildcat #5 Gary Davis was next to score as he took in an 8-yard run around the corner for the score. Narcisse connected with the extra point and with 4:08 left in the third quarter, St. James led 27-0.
Kenny Zenon would score his second touchdown of the game when he took in a 1-yard run with 7:20 left in the game.
Chalmette would eventually score on a 1-yard run with 1:24 left in the game. Final score: 34-7.
The Wildcats will now begin preparation for next week’s game in which they will host the 5A powerhouse Destrehan Wildcats.
NOTABLES The field where the game took place – Chalmette’s stadium – experienced 8 feet of flooding water just after Hurricane Katrina. The game began at 4:00 pm because the hurricane had knocked down the stadium lights.
On a minor note, Kenny Zenon has changed his jersey number from #16 to #1. It is not known yet if this change will be permanent.
Injury news; the early diagnostics from the Chalmette team doctor is that Wildcat, Luther Ambrose sustained a mildly sprained ankle. It is not known at this time if Ambrose will miss any playing time or not.
