ST. JAMES, La – The St. James Wildcats scored their fourth shutout victory of the season and it came in the first round of the playoffs as the Wildcats defeated the visiting East Beauregard Trojans 47-0.  One playoff game down; four to go if the Wildcats want to be call “champions.”

During the week, Coach Gaille stressed to his team the importance of focusing on only your next opponent.  Tonight, St. James looked like a team who took East Beauregard seriously as the Wildcats played a very sound football game on all sides of the ball.

The St. James defense – sometimes dubbed “Legion of Doom” – created that old fashion havoc that they are known for and they didn’t waste any time starting.

St. James kicked off to open the game and the Wildcat defense quickly went to work.  After forcing the Trojans to a quick three-and-out, St. James blocked the punt and Jared Byers scooped it up in the end zone for the touchdown.  Jaurelle Narcisse kicked the extra point and with 9:50 remaining in the first quarter, St. James led 7-0.

The second East Beauregard punt of the night wasn’t blocked but it still gave St. James a very short field.  A few plays later, Wildcat quarterback Antonio Phillips rolled out and hit Craig Duronslet on a 7-yard touchdown pass.  Narcisse’s extra point was good and St. James led 14-0 with 6:22 left in the first quarter.

The next time St. James took the ball on offense, it was from their own 5-yard line.  To cap off a two-play scoring drive, Luther Ambrose took a carry to the left side and found a hole.  84 yards later, Ambrose was in the end zone with the touchdown.  The extra point was blocked, thus St. James led 20-0 with 27 seconds left in the first quarter.

The Wildcat defense decided they wanted another score when Kenny Zenon intercepted a pass and dash and dodged would-be tacklers in route to a 50-yard interception return.  The extra point gave St. James a 27-0 lead with 9:48 left in the first half.

Jaurelle Narcisse was next in line as he blasted up the middle untouched for a 34-yard run.  The extra point gave St. James a 34-0 lead with 6:57 left in the first half.

Kenny Zenon would then get an offensive touchdown as he scored on a nice 18-yard run with 2:54 left in first half.  The extra point was no good and St. James would take a 40-0 lead into halftime.

The Wildcat offense took the ball first to start the second half and marched on a “textbook” drive burning time and chunking up yardage.  Gary Davis capped off the drive when he scored on a 6-yard run.  With the extra point, St. James took a 47-0 lead with 7:42 left in the third quarter.

From here on out, The Wildcats basically played everyone on the sideline who had a full uniform on.

Final score: St. James wins 47-0.

NOTABLES

Hats off to #3 Brady Glaser of East Beauregard.  Glaser was not only their starting quarterback, but also their starting safety and played a lot in special teams as well.

Luther Ambrose’s 84-yard touchdown run was his only carry of the game.  Also, Antonio Phillips only threw one pass and it was a completion for a touchdown.

Because of the LHSAA’s system of determining who plays home in the playoffs, St. James must now gear up to travel next Friday night to take on the Mamou Demons (9-2).  Mamou was away in their first game when they beat Menard 40-29, thus they have now earned a home game.
